Guardian - Fractal Hammer

Incorrect Traits[edit]

Currently the build is set to 3/5/0/4/2 with Inscribed Removal. For Hammer DPS, isn't 5/3/0/4/2 more optimal for the 10% symbol damage, greater power, and a more useful trait ability in the first line? Calach (talk) 02:36, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

If you look at the video guide at the end of the article, it goes directly to where Obal shows this build. I'm not actually sure about your suggestion, as I'm not good with hammers, but the article reflects what Obal seems to be suggesting. Would be good if someone else could weigh in here. This also probably isn't the best place to do theorycrafting discussions as there is very little exposure to these discussion pages right now. Chase (talk) 04:25, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Hammer autoattack only[edit]

Skale Venom[edit]

I thought Skale Venom was optimal for FotM? I don't run high level fractals for it to matter yet.--Akmdw (talk) 23:24, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Meta?[edit]

How this build is even considered worthy of the meta tag, I have no idea. The build is first described as a support hammer build, using hammer/greatsword, with scepter instead of greatsword for ranged fights, then it randomly throws in trait replacement ideas that change it to what seems to be a greatsword/sword build (yet the writing is not clear on this point). There hasn't been nearly enough review or cleaning up of the build for it to deserve the meta ranking. At the moment, it's just one person's collection of builds for a myriad of PvE situations. Quixotic (talk) 21:28, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

Go ahead and fix it up :) From what I remember doing fractals, hammer really helped. Esp with the longer symbol duration. Not sure what is up with the torch trait, but I haven't played this in a long time now. It is yours to spruce up if you want as a part of a community effort. If it behooves you so I can even change the tag back to "Testing" so we can re-vote on it. But I'm sure it will again be put in the great and eventually in the meta tag. Many guardians run something similar enough to it in upper level fractals or casual pug runs. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 22:30, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

What has this to do with Weapons?[edit]

If not using Greatsword or Sword on swap and using Signet of Resolve Signet of Resolve, swapBlind Exposure Blind Exposure for Signet Mastery Signet Mastery.
I do not see what this has to do with swords or greatswords Fredor (talk) 15:42, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
The blinds apply vulnerability « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 16:43, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
Yeah but taking one source of blindness out of the build shouldn't make the trait useless since the guard still has two other good ways to generate blindness Fredor (talk) 18:00, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
I assume there is only the profession mechanic Virtue that applies blinds if you don't take either sword as your swap. Since that one is mainly for trash, the extra vulnerabilty perhaps is not as important as when trying to apply it to bosses with your gs/sword? I'm not quite sure « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 18:21, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
You use either x/focus, sword/focus or gs with the hammer. Thus you have at least one to two additional aoe blinds at your disposal. Furthermore is this an FRACTAL build which is by definition full of annoyingly strong that practically scream to be blinded and used to recharge your virtue. Fredor (talk) 19:52, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
Since I did not get a reply, I went ahead and changed it to something more sensible. Fredor (talk) 13:11, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Make it more fractal focused[edit]

Been running a lot of fractal 49s and I think this might need a few tweaks so it's fractal focused. Trait's and Gear are fine but looking at this table their are quite a few Day time fractals compared to Night time. Force/Night is more DPS but unlike dungeons which are all the commonly run dungeons AC, TA, SE, CoF, and CoE are at night. You can go through most of your fractals without ever being able to use your night sigil. Minus swamp which 99% of groups roll for and is a night time fractal. Snowblind, Dredge, Grawl, and Jade Maw (lol) are the only night time fractals. So the main bar should probably be Force/Frailty especially since most people don't make two ascended hammers. And we should remove the Undead slaying sigil completely since this should never be run outside of fractals (except maybe Aetherpath). Also remove Purging Flames since condis are rarely an issue in fractals except for Mai Trin. And replace it with Shield of the Avenger since even thought it's over kill with most groups wanting two guards for less stress. You never even end up using purging flames so might as well take SoA which will still be useful. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 18:59, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

Yeah you are right about that. I am gonna rework the skill variants. You go and edit the weapons. Fredor (talk) 20:52, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Also, could you look into the signet of resolve variant? Someone added that a few days ago but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 20:57, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
That has been there for quite some time. I rewrote it a few days ago because it made no sense. Fredor (talk) 21:08, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
It was added 9 days ago by Linaeu according to the build history. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 21:13, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Ahh, ok nevermind then. Well I if you only exchange radiant fire for the signet trait then it is ok, although I cannot think of a scenario where it is better than shelter. So we might as well throw it out.Fredor (talk) 21:21, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Well I improved the skill variants a bit (althought I couldn't find the code for "Stand your Ground!"). Opinions? Fredor (talk) 21:08, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Looks good so far, I'm just going to remove the "when using sword for long boss fights" long boss fight you are usually camping hammer so this doesn't seem useful. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 21:37, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
I also added a "Elite Skill" section. Shall I also make the elite optional? | Trait Variants: I have never seen someone trait focus. I think we should scratch that. What about blinding jeopardy? Fredor (talk) 21:49, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Nah you use Renewed Focus the majority of the time so might as well keep it on the main bar. Same as Shelter there are a few times Signet of Resolve can be useful over shelter but the majority of the time Shelter is better. Focus Mastery maybe keep it, but generally if I'm traiting that far into Zeal in fractals I go with Zealous Blade or Scepter Power. Someone might find it useful when trying to keep Mai Trin in the electric field to remove her stacks. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 21:55, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Yeah I use renewed focus most of the times, but speed runner tend to go for the book and it's poor mans time warp recently. You can't block the lightning fields with the focus, only renewed focus does that. Thus I would scratch it because there are way more better alternatives. Fredor (talk) 22:11, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
What about larger symbols? I do not think that they are superior to shout cd Fredor (talk) 21:50, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
I always grab it in Ascalon and Dredge fractal because the retreat isn't doing much for you and being able to hit all the mobs is useful. During the bosses shout master is much better but aegis isn't as strong against trash. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 21:58, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
These fractals are_the_fractals where a well places retreat might decide about wipe or not. These trash mobs just hit too hard to not take retreat with you. For harmless trash, well no reason to get fancy because of them. Fredor (talk) 22:11, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

Update or archive?[edit]

Shall we update or archive this build? Skilling on hammer costs you that much utility and damage that it might not be worthwhile anymore. Fredor (talk) 13:48, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

It needs a large overhaul and I think we should put the time needed in to change it to the newer versions of the hammer build. Hammer guardian is certainly very viable in dungeons and fractals due to the support, I think many people would appreciate the update because I doubt everyone has perfect groups. The hammer is amazing for any pugging situation.Hokie 15:56, 19 July 2015 (EST)
Would be nice if there were a "supporty" yet dps oriented fractal hammer update. Always a nice pug carry « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 20:05, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
https://youtu.be/KBfQUMRdobo?t=498 Fredor (talk) 21:40, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
Added the new traits based on obals guide. But I changed radiant fire with the 10% dmg modifier upon retribution like SC did with the main guardian build. I also deleted the outdated rotation and added the video. This build still needs trait variants, rotations and a general checkup, but that should better be done by the guardian guys. Fredor (talk) 12:20, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
I dont really like the build mentioned by DnT. Dont think it's really worth swapping to mace during a fight, as well as they count too much on Radiant Fire imo. On the other hand, I'm not sure at all, if you can rely on Retribution. You dont really get retal unless someone blasts your field. Was checking Wrath of Justice together with Binding Jeopardy, you get some nice vuln at the start, but do you need it? No matter what you do with the hammer build, you always will miss a useful trait, that's what bothers me most. But yeah, as I kinda mentioned, I would play the hammer guard different. It is mainly for fractals, so I'd aim on that with traits and playstyle and not some theory, spreadsheet paperwork stuff what DnT always does. Something looking good on paper doesnt mean it's good in action as well. Just me two cents. Thor (talk) 14:37, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

But I'll say it again. I have no idea about guardian. That's more Theorycrafting from my side. T1r1g0n (talk) 02:25, 03 August 2015 (UTC)

DnT calculated that mace/torch is the higher dps. I also switched out retribution to be in line with dnts builds Fredor (talk) 01:14, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
