A very good DPS + minor support build. The tradeoff with the lower dps potential compared to other power builds is good bar breakage and survivability+res traits from bloodmagic make it good for learning fights.

This is Necromancer, and this is Reaper. Reaper is literally incapable of having good DPS and its utility is nowhere near as good as any other class, save Thief which has even worse utility. No competent group will take a Reaper over anything else and the optimal Necro build is always Scourge.

In most groups, this build is considered an instant ticket to a kick for good reason - it has poor damage and those who play it are generally not very skilled. If you must play Necro, go for Scourge, never Reaper. Reaper is bad everywhere, Scourge is good everywhere.

Chinkeeyong said this build was good February 2018

Solid DPS option with good CC and boonstrip. Inferior to Holosmith in organized groups, but brings incredible carry and rez potential with Blood Magic. Also a great build for soloing due to large health pool, self-sustain, and cleave damage.

Foxman525 said this build was great July 2017

I use a similar build that is more tailored to Axe since I use it in both weapon sets. With the recent buff to Necro Axe, I am getting about 1.5k per hit for auto, and 16k, 18k, or 22k hits with Axe#2 when enemy is at 50% health, and that is with full Viper's instead of Berserker in favor of some Condi Damage from chill and Condi Duration of vulnerability. It uses

The build uses all dmg% modifiers including, Unholy Fervor (10%), Close to Death (20%), Strength of Undeath (5%), Sigil of Force (5%), Rune of the Berserker (5%), 25 Vulnerability by oneself at enemy health 50% (25%), plus the extra 1% per Vulnerability on Axe#2 is another (25%). For Axe#2, when an enemy is at >50%, all of this combines to +95% dmg modifier plus a 80% crit chance with only base crit damage of 150%.

I believe that if we get a stat combo that had Power, Ferocity, Precision, and Expertise, then Axe might become Meta, and be used more frequently by Necros in general. I think GS is still too slow.

I tried the build and it really feels good in the playstyle and i managed to cleer open world stuff and low level fractals fairly easy with it

Foefaller said this build was great December 2016

This might not be the meta -that probably goes to the Viper build- but as long as you stick to open world and sub-50 fractals, you'll probably never notice. Fun and great for breakbars, dagger should be what you use for bosses but GS still has uses for crowds and CC. Ran this for most of the last year and even now when I'm *finally* making a Viper set for fractals and raids I'm still keeping a zerker set to run this for pretty much everything else.

With the recent nerfs to Viper Horror, this continues to be "the" way to play PvE, despite its flaws (most of which are innate to the class itself).

Goroth said this build was great September 2016

I run similar build with Marauder gear and had really enjoyable time. very easy to run PvE and fractals till 50. I dont do raids with necro so I haven't test it yet. And on the plus side My necro got best survive ability from rest of my characters.

Fredor said this build was good August 2016

Mediocre damage meets heavy cc. Better than the standard power build, but not great. Is far outclassed by the viper horror build in high level pve content

ImtheScatMan said this build was great May 2016

I'm really surprised about how strong this build is. Fun to play + good damage + some utility = deserves meta. Also condi build isn't good for non-raid content, so this one should be the meta build for necro PvE

ObscureSlayer said this build was great May 2016

Tried this build in tier 4 fractals and its just amazing. Reaper Shroud feels so good and strong on the initial burst, dagger and wells will do the trick until the 50% hp treshold, where Greatsword is just SO satisfying. It's condi brother, Viper Horror, suffer from a big ramp up time, so it's worse than this Power build except maybe for rreally long fights, or encounters where you can use Epi to share the conditions. Power Reaper stands as the best necro build for non-raid pve content.

Gold Medal - Great
Ishin rikku said this build was great May 2016

Really solid build for dungeons, fractals and open-world pve. Only falls shorts to the condi build in long fights (90+ fractals) but it's still a nice build and really fun to play. It could use some buffs on targets that are above 50% hp, but i give it a "Great" since you carry your wieght perfectly in any scenario that isn't a raid encounter

Gold Medal - Great
Gamec said this build was great May 2016

Greatsword for necro is one of the hardest hitting weapons in this game, it is slow but if it wasn't it would be just the most overpowered weapon for pve, this build offers decent group support with blood magic and also a solo alternative which makes it solid for exploring the majority of pve content, while dagger offers good utility and so much synergy with traits. I'd suggest not taking Dhuumfire for the solo version though, stick with death perception because crit is better than bleed and it counts for all skills in shroud, take bitter chill if you don't use focus, it still has synergy with decimate defenses

Gold Medal - Great
BlasiuS said this build was great May 2016

After 50% health Gravedigger is one of the highest DPS ability in the game. Definitely the highest for the Necro. This build is still the best power-based build for the Necromancer, and is perfect for running Dungeons and all but the highest fractals, where enemies and bosses can be quickly bursted to < 50% health. At very high fractal levels, where the bosses have obscene amounts of health paired with high armor, Viper Horror MIGHT be slightly better.

A great all-around PvE build for almost all content, and being full berserker gear means you can swap it all to other mesmer/elementalist if you wish

Bronze Medal - Basic
SalmonPancakes said this build was basic April 2016

I can see why greatsword is used. It's a new weapon. It's part of the elite specialization and everyone wants to use it. But the attacking speed is really slow. Sure, the numbers popping up on your screen may seem huge but it's at a compromise of your attacking speed.

Now that golem DPS has been implemented. Proper tests should be conducted whether this greatsword is still viable in comparison to dagger/x

Inquisitor1597 said this build was great April 2016

A definite improvement over the base Necromancer. This build consistently does high DPS without sacrificing survivability. The DPS of this build is phenomenal, and it also contains decent support (For a Necromancer, at least).

MoonKK said this build was good November 2015

Best dungeon and fractals necromancer build. However, best for necromancer still doesn't quite match the likes of other mainly DPS professions such as Dragonhunter, Tempest, Heralds, and Engineers in dungeons/fractals. This is in due to the "middle of the pack" DPS of the reaper (and the lowest of the list above), while simultaneously offering little group support despite its admitted presence. Today, the gap is closer than ever and a player of great skill in undoubtedly match the usefulness of the other professions in practice. However, when evaluating the theoretical benefits and contributions of a reaper in the Dungeon Category, there just isn't much that makes it stand out. Therefore, I give this build a "good" rating, as it is acceptable and the best thing a necromancer can run, but it still suffers from having relatively low DPS given its lack of group support.
