Kiting - Legacy of the Foefire

GIF support[edit]

As you can see the guide has a huge potential, very few visitors of Metabattle know all these spots and with a GIF you can shot it very easily rather than combining 10 screenshots with description. I feel like a direct GIF support (so that as you click it you see on the same page of the guide and avoid back and forward to gyfcat) will make this more user friendly. Also give me some feedback on the guide! I've already some point to discuss:

  • Shall I add teleport spots as well or make them on a separate guide since only some classes can have acces.
  • Shall I add ALL kiting spots, which means adding the classic LOS positions that you can use without many skills or are they too obiouvs?

--Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 17:44, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Gj so far :P What do you mean by classic LoS positions? Btw I'll be online in 10-20 mins or so, we can talk about all the potential spots then. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 18:01, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
Yeah it's easier to explain ingame. I'll be online tonight. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 19:04, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

As Hanz suggested, I've changed the setup of GIFs,(example) they now have UI desactivated and a Metabattle logo on the left corner, making the GIF cleaner and easier to udnerstand. I'll continue with this kind of guide for all the other maps as soon as the wiki gets direct GIF support. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 19:48, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Considering how insanely cool that is (did not know about that spot) I am going to support this as much as possible. Let's clean it up some more. If you can't get higher quality let me know and I'll personally re-record every one of those locations. We can eventually discuss getting it integrated into the site. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 23:29, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
This is amazing. An idea would be to embed Youtube videos for the different spots(almost no loading issues for the viewer). Also, I think that you can mix everything on one page starting with the "general" kiting followed by class specific.-- Galaxian (talk) 01:00, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
Unfortunately the quality is something I can't improve. I've tried ALL recording programs and this is th best I managed to do. I would really appreciate if you could re record them all but I personally feel like this quality is high enough for its purpose. About the guide layout, rather than making map - classes - kiting I would make map - skills (leap, teleport, walking) - kiting since many classes shares this kind of skills (ex: both mesmeers and thieves can teleport). The only badside is that these skills have some slightly differences, like the ranger Swoop is a leap but is different from warriorleap. Youtube is something that coudl work to. The badside is that you usually want to watch these videos many times before you learn the kiting spot and Youtube isn't the best to reproduce vieos again and again while GIF does it automatically. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 09:23, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
We would not use youtube for < 10 second clips. I'll try re-recording them in higher quality and see if that let's us lower the resolution so it can fit on a page more easily. Instead of "Map > Skills" perhaps you could do "Map > Area" with a note. For instance the one that is linked could be "Map > Waterfall SE" and as a note it could be listed "dodge jump" or for one's that require swoop instead of leap it could say "Ranger only"/"Swoop required' « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 12:27, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
Yeah that should work. Write a legend at the beginning for what works, like X= works with Blink D= requires dodje jump, etc.. and put all the kiting spots in the same guide for each map. We could set a time for recording so we make sure that you record all the kiting spots or if you know them all go ahead :D. Would be stupid to have me recording uploading and you just redoing the work. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 14:16, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
Well I do *not* know all the locations ;) and I'm not on EU either. Do you have an acct on NA? « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 15:17, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
ahahah.. No I don't but I have a second trash account where I can delete everything and move to NA, if possible. And if possible, how can I do it? --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 15:28, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
Or you could buy an alt acc, it's 75% off again. I'm thinking about doing that too. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 15:35, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
I'm fine with Billa's quality btw, maybe not full HD but it's definitely not bad especially for the pop-up window size it'll be featured in (I guess?). --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 15:33, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

It's now been one month since I wrote this project, any news on GIF being implemented on the website? (I know I'm stressful but I'l be away most of the summer and won't be able to work on it) --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 07:22, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

Working on it RIGHT NOW! :D Sorry kinda forgot about this, it's good you reminded me! « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 13:55, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

Okay here is your working example :) and usage instructions here « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 14:04, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

Naming[edit]

Walking should be changed to Jumping imo, as nearly all of those are jumps. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 14:05, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

Yeah makes more sense to me. I would rather just not categorize those ones. If you require something special like a skill/dodge-jump, only then specify « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 14:08, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
Yeah I just wrote the first thing that came to my mind. Gonna change it. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 14:42, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
We could call it footjob too Kappa. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 14:51, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

Frozen Gfy[edit]

Most likely is due to incorrect parameter. If the size of the video is in kilobyts (KB) as opposed to MB, then just put in 0 for the parameter. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 18:52, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

I haven't really got the size parameter. Does it change the size of how the GIF is displayed or should it match the GIF size (10 KB, 1 MB,...) ? --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 19:09, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
I am experiencing the following issues: 1. Some GIFs don't play at all. 2. All GIFs are extermely slow, they are required to load before I can watch them. Other than that the guide is amazing. My internet speed is 94,41/14,73 Mbit/s down/up.-- Galaxian (talk) 20:18, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
@Galaxian, could you post your CPU / Ram usage when opening them via ctrl+shift+esc (task manager) that might be the limiting factor, because my internet speeds are slower than yours, both down and up « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 23:02, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
No issues with the CPU/RAM unless I have 6+ playing at the same time. They seem to be loading fine now though, only the really short ones are totally messed up for some reason :/-- Galaxian (talk) 23:43, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
Do you mean that it's recorded badly or that it takes a lot to charge? I can record them again if it's everyone's problem. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 00:08, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
Quality is great and there is nothing bad aboud the recording :) I was experiencing issues with the short videos as they were freezing and the timer jumped around randomly but everything seems to be working now :D EDIT: Random issue again, Point to Bridge isn't playing at all now :( -- Galaxian (talk) 01:08, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
I fixed Point to bridge, they must have rounded to 1M, but I set it to 0 and it started to work for me « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 03:01, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
Great, everything runs perfectly now :) -- Galaxian (talk) 11:57, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
Here is an example of where to find the Gfy value, billa « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 23:23, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
Ok that's really clear! Thanks for the picture, going to fix the GIFs. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 23:35, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

Almost ready![edit]

The raw data is finally done! All kiting spots that I know are here. What the guide needs is a review, then it can be published on Reddit for the first wave fo feedbacks. A couple of thing to check:

  1. Have we listed ALL the kiting spots?
  2. Grammar (Will always be an issue since I'm not native speaker)
  3. Naming: I haven't really spent much time naming the GIFS, they are quite intuitive but if you find more approprate ones feel free to edit.
  4. The organization. Are you fine with splitting the guides into: Map > Zone > mechanic (teleport,PS,...) > GIF ?. In my opinion it's not worth to create a page that redirects to the single maps if there^s nothing written on it. What could be useful, as Chase proposed, is a guide where you explain how to behave on a fight, how to mange your CD, etc, and redirect to these spots.
  5. An option to close the GIF would be nice. While the possibility to stop it avoid your browswer from freezing if you have many GIFs open your page become really long
  6. Sometimes GIFs autoplay, sometimes they don't. Not sure if it's my computer only. Anyway it's a small issue,
  7. Sometimes, when I open a lot of GIFS, some start playing but then display an error that says "no content found for this video".

I'll publish this guide as soon as everythin's been fixed! --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 19:08, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

By « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 23:07, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
  1. I'm not sure, but I think this is a very good start
  2. I will go through this
  3. ^
  4. Organization is fine by me xP
  5. Possibilty to pause is already there. Closing the GFY seems to be harder... but I am still looking into it. My JQuery-Fu is lacking :(
  6. When gfy doesn't auto-play the main culprit is an incorrect size parameter. It needs to match the size of the gfy on the site (not the original upload, as their site converts it after uploading). It is explained in the usage section. If this is not the case, then please point it out to me again and I'll check what's up :)
  7. Haven't run into this yet, please elaborate if it's the same video doing it or something specific?
I've fixed all parameters. The problem I have is that the following sentence displays(translated roghly from italian): "No file with format o MME type supported was found". I've done some research on Goggle and it seems that it's a problem related to Firefox. It occrus randomly and only when I open many GIFs, except for the GIF "Point to Bridge" under Graveyard. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 00:06, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
You got most of the spots, but there are some you missed. there are 2 more regular jumping spots in the blue base, one on waterfall and one for getting between graveyard and waterfall. i dont know how to do the gif stuff/have no time currently. ask me ingame i show them to you (lemmingstyle). also there is a pretty nice leap/jump spot on graveyard i think you missed. i got it on my stream. maybe you can recreate it : http://www.twitch.tv/lemmingstyle/c/4994466 Fearlegend (talk) 21:04, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the disponibility. Another user also sent me a video with some interesting missing spots. I've got no time currently but I'll complete the guide this weekend. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 13:51, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

Linking the guide[edit]

I've added all missing spots and will start working on the next map (Forest of Niflhel) anytime soon. Shall these guides be linked to all builds? I feel like it has a low visibility on the page. The section guide is unknown to many players (also because nobody really takes care of it) but it's also visibly hidden from the frontpage. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 13:37, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

Perhaps an easier solution would be to move the guide links up a bit to be between the gametypes and the professions. Or maybe guides could be merged into the gametype sections? So under PvP for instance after HoT we would have 3 sections: "Conquest", "Stronghold" and "PvP Guides". --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 14:27, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
What do you guys think about adding a header just like on mobafire where users can switch between "Builds", "Guides" and "PvP Stats"? PvP Stats is something that I have been working on for a bit now but it's not ready yet. Need to change the css and add few more options, been on hold for a while since I realized that the leaderboards aren't being updated due to the season...-- Galaxian (talk) 16:20, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
I don't know what the average Metabattle user thinks but I've stopped caring about leaderboards a long time ago. They are completely messed up and mean nothing. Unless Anet changes them I personally don't see any purpose on it. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 17:48, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
What Billaboong said + there are plenty of gw2 ladder sites already like gw2score, gw2shack or the gw2guru one. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 10:56, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
I might be wrong but wouldn't it be best to collect all GW2 related resources at one place, metabattle in this case, where users can simply navigate between them via a simple header such as builds, guides, pvp, wvw, crafting and other stuff? After all, metabattle wasn't unique when we launched it but it had a better services than other other 5+- build websites that already existed at its launch. You guys are right about the leaderboards and that they are useless but there are people that care and I think that anet will keep updating it and making it better, I hope...-- Galaxian (talk) 17:10, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Well it doesn't hurt to have a pvp scoreboard here :P But collecting everything to one place has many cons imo. 1st we don't really have the manpower - after the specialization patch we'll likely have to shut down the Roaming and World Boss categories too. 2nd expanding into the territory of other sites can have a negative effect on how the gw2 community thinks about us. With builds it was fine because other sites did a bad job of managing builds and even if they tried to have a vetting system it was flooded with voters who did not know anything about the game - the later one is becoming more of an issue here too as we don't really have the tools to enforce the rules. Some voters admittedly vote based on hotjoin. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 08:21, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
"after the specialization patch we'll likely have to shut down the Roaming and World Boss categories too" Why ? --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 12:04, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
Lack of contribution. Roaming is already at least ~6 months outdated. Even if we somehow adjust all the traits for the specialization patch, gear and skills are still outdated and there is nobody to take care of those. If an entire section is outdated users start to wonder whether they should trust other sections or not (experienced these concerns on reddit and the official forum many times) so it has a negative impact on the entire site. Same goes for world bosses. I believe the 2 biggest problems of metabattle atm are: 1) every new user thinks that contributing means submitting builds and nobody thinks about polishing existing ones 2) user votes are completely biased and there is nothing we can do about it. I was going over many things on GWPvX recently, the only way they could ensure quality was by invalidating incorrect votes all the time which we don't have the tools for. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 13:23, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

Rating[edit]

I've noticed the new rating system and I like the idea. It should be added for guides aswell! --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 19:05, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

West/East bridge[edit]

Shouldn't it be South/North? --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 18:21, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

How about West-North and East-South? Jokes apart, I don't mind either way. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 23:42, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
