Direct talk[edit]

Heya, if you're looking to put together templates for tagging builds here are a few I blatantly ripped off from PvX--TahiriVeila (talk) 03:21, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

I have already created all of the templates a few days ago, the only one that is missing is the "Archived" one which I will add when I get back today.--Galaxian (talk) 11:10, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Hey I responded to your email as well. Also can you move this page its in the wrong section. Warrior - Legendary Imbued Shaman --Josepepowner (talk) 21:27, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Bringing builds forward. Can I start moving builds into the meta phase. We have about 10 builds that are in no need for discussion they are just meta. as far as the others we leave them there till the site receives more views and people can start voting on them.

Wait another day before moving them. I will be updating the frontpage tomorrow and the builds might need category editing due to the new sections. It will be easier if all of the builds are in the "Trial" so that I can locate them faster.--Galaxian (talk) 22:48, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Something about the PvE build structure feel un-unified. I think maybe what's throwing me off is that it starts with skills, then some variants, then traits, then variants, then weapons, then variants, then armor, then variants, etc. Would I be ruffling feathers if I move stuff around on the Elementalist - S/D LH 0/4/5/5/0 page to come up with a structure that feels more fluid for PvE builds? --DEKeyz2Chaos (talk) 20:57, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Go for it Chase (talk) 21:25, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Hey do you think we should add the foods. Like we have for skills. Also is this the proper way of linking sigils outside of the weapons section.

Superior Sigil of the Night

Just wondering if this was intended to be this way. I kinda just tried it when I made my first build and it worked and I just went with it. If this isn't the right way what is?

You can use Gw2skill for sigil/food/runes/skills although I went ahead and created separate templates such as Gw2sigil/Gw2food/Gw2rune that can be used just like Gw2skill. Btw, I will be replying to your email over the coming day, I am traveling today and will most likely be unavailable during that time.

Requesting deletion[edit]

I've created the template Template:Delete. Simply add reason for deletion to the top of any page you wish to request be deleted, and the template will add a little box to the top of the page and add the page to Category:Candidates for deletion which will list all of the pages that are candidates for deletion.--TV Thief Icon.jpgTahiriVeila(talk) 02:50, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

I will make sure to add and explain how to use it in the "format" page once I get on a stable internet.--Galaxian (talk) 21:08, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

New Main Page look[edit]

Why are you trying to avoid the purple for the Pvp section? :P It fits and looks a lot better than the current light-red. Btw I think you should use the same colors (yours are too light, stronger colors look better) and format as Chase posted (I liked the bigger icons next to the section names as well as them not being part of the table, pesonally). Best would be to take your sections of the tables you've posted and the entire look of Chase's. Also, sPvP is still a pointless section. Nobody makes builds for sPvP. Conquest should be there only, or if you need a second category to make it look better, I'm still saying we should add "Unreleased gamemode" with a lock icon next to it :p --Hanz (talk) 13:01, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

I agree conquest is the best choice for PvP. I'm not sure the term is recognized though. Perhaps just have "All PvP Builds" as the only category there. Obviously I agree the purple makes most sense ;) -- What would "unreleased gamemode" be? Like Deathmatch? For that new map I guess Chase (talk) 13:41, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Unreleased gamemode simply stands for a gamemode yet to be released - they've promised like a year ago that they are working on those so it would be a placeholder, and an image of a lock would symbolize that this section is still locked. being the only gamemode, conquest is a pretty recognized term, and with no other categories you can browse nobody could get lost. The new map is a joke.. the entire community wanted an arena style PvP mode, but it was too complicated for the dev team to understand - so they've implemented an FPS-like zergy chaos with respawns that nobody wanted, that's why the number of players on those maps is 0 on EU, can't speak for NA. --Hanz (talk) 14:05, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
When I create changes on the website I try to make them as userfriendly as possible. The only problem that I'm having with the idea of removing sPvP and introducing "Conquest" is that it might raise questions such as "Is this website up to date?", "Where is the sPvP/tPvP secion?" etc. Feel free to give me your point of view here besides that there is no need of a sPvP section due to the fact that sPvP/tPvP uses pretty much the same builds. Btw, I am trying to avoid the purple color since the "Meta" tag is using it but it looks like we will be using purple color together with the suggested layout.--Galaxian (talk) 16:46, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Your're the best! ^^ Yeah I guess "sPvP" won't hurt anyone anyways. Bit off-topic but I've consulted (or attempted to) 3 WvW guild leaders, 1 was not online in the last week so couldn't respond yet, 1 posted the site and it's "recruitment" on their global-WvW forum but seems like nobody wants to edit currently, and 1 is interested but may have time issues. I will ask the later one to at least name the builds if he can't upload them and then I may do it myself. Also, as the PvP section already has 30 builds, I think that part might be announced within 2 weeks on reddit and the official forum if you agree - bringing in crowds for active use should spark interest in some WvW and PvE players making them more willing to support the site. --Hanz (talk) 17:00, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
That's great! I really hope that we get some help from WvW based guilds. And I agree on the Reddit part, it's amazing for website traffic and hopefully some of them will decide to stay and help out. May I ask when have you guys thought about moving builds to the meta section?--Galaxian (talk) 17:07, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Well we could organize the current PvP builds tomorrow because they are basically ready. For announcement we'd wait until the site's kinda finalized format-wise: main page and maybe some features. Tho I've got 2 questions: me and Dantes know where the current builds belong because we've played them a lot the past 2 years I think (personally I've played every listed build but ranger ones), so we could already put the current 30 builds into meta/great/good without a Testing phase, because most of these builds aren't new (but are up-to-date ofc). Could we skip the Testing period for them? Then any build that gets added after these ones would go through the rate phase, but this should be done now to get the site going. If an arguement begins on its talk page about it's position, we move it to Testing immediately, but i don't think this will happen. 2nd question, if we want to put a build in 2 categories, both Meta and Great, is that possible? --Hanz (talk) 18:13, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Alright. Feel free to place the build in Great/Good even though they haven't been rated. I will try to create a template now that explains why it's in that category without any rating, you can use the following tag:
Also, if you would like to put a build in additional categories you can do that by simply adding:
right under:
Maybe you don't need to create a template for it: we move it to testing, then we give it the rating and move it up, would that work? --Hanz (talk) 18:44, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Yeah that would work too actually.--Galaxian (talk) 20:04, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
I've tried but it doesn't really seem to appear in both categories. Could you make a template like in gwpvx that allows both the rating and its meta label to be displayed? Like this: --Hanz (talk) 08:50, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
I just tried to add additional categories to a page and it worked just fine, are you sure that you entered the category name correctly? I have also edited the Meta-Build template and added rating to it.--Galaxian (talk) 10:06, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
It works now, but displays the template twice. Once displays the the Great table and under that another table with the meta text. Any way to just include it in both categories with having 1 table? (the meta table shows rating now and that's awesome but the build either shows up in meta ot the Great category, not in both when browsing from the main page). --Hanz (talk) 10:31, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
You can display it in 2 categories with having 1 tabe (either meta or great). Could you link me to the build in question and I will see if something is wrong please?--Galaxian (talk) 10:36, 30 July 2014 (UTC) 100% my fault but no idea how to make it. --Hanz (talk) 10:49, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
There you go, take a look on how I did that. Note, you can only show one table per build but you can add a build to multiple categories.--Galaxian (talk) 10:56, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Ah ty --Hanz (talk) 10:58, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
One minor thing, the Pvp section is now ready, but if you click the All builds button it gives an empty section - individual sections like Great and Good work pefectly. --Hanz (talk) 11:16, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Yeah I need to figure out how to solve this issue, for now you can just add
so that the build is added to the "All" section.--Galaxian (talk) 11:26, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

PvP section: ready to ship?[edit]

I think it's ready to be announced on reddit and the official forum. I will try to contact some streamers for additional support as well as leaders of bigger guilds if you agree. --Hanz (talk) 11:44, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Sound fine by me. Do you want me to post the Reddit/GW2forum thread or would you like to do it yourself?--Galaxian (talk) 11:50, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
How about we split it, you do official forum and I do reddit. (I'm banned from the forum because of an inappropriate Lord faren line in the lore section.) --Hanz (talk) 12:08, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Alright :D, just make sure to follow up with the comments that are being posted on the Reddit thread.--Galaxian (talk) 12:22, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Maybe you should do the reddit one too, I'm getting downvoted for some reason. Also, post the main page's URL too on the official forum, might do good for the other sections. --Hanz (talk) 12:38, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

PvP categories[edit]

Dantess and I were talking about the crossover of builds between SPvP and TPvP and we both agree that it's quite superfluous in it's implementation. In the old gwpvx there were categories like "Dungeon" which had sort of a "sub-category" you could call it where they'd not only separate build names by "Class - Build Name" but also as "Team - Number of Players - Team Build Name". I think we can do something similar for solo q in our PvP section and reduce it to one category "Conquest" or "Structured PvP". Inside we can add niche builds like "Solo Q - Engineer - Decap Bunker". Those builds will be signified to only be discussed in their "meta"-ness according to Solo Q. There are very few builds that will be like this, but it will be better to have their own "Solo Q" section under the Structured PvP/Conquest category. If you all agree, I'll start separating them and update the main page as well. Chase (talk) 15:02, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Yes yes, discussed many times already, but now that the builds are out of trial it seems even more pointless. Both s/tPvP sections are exactly the same, merging them would happen anyways and as seen on reddit this just creates confusion. It should happen. --Hanz (talk) 18:23, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Alright, I have been looking at the Reddit comments too. I will merge the sections into one called "Conquest", all of the builds will need editing so that they are added to the new category.--Galaxian (talk) 20:01, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Left Navbar Flickers on reload[edit]

Happened after Community portal was added. Is it possessed?? >:) Chase (talk) 20:09, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

I just noticed that after seeing this comment, I have no idea why it's doing that :D--Galaxian (talk) 20:15, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
This happens because it is hiding "Navigation" after the page reloads. Is there a way we can hide it before the page loads? Chase (talk) 22:08, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Can I just say I have achieved wiki Badassery?[edit]

Hey all, decided to work allllllllll day (like 8-10 hours) on the new trait system. My goals were:

  • Make it really easy to use (Like really @*#$% easy for the end user.)
  • Make it unique to the class using it
  • Allow for minor traits!

Rooms for improvement:

  • Using the Str extension we can even get rid of all the pipelines and even get rid of all the different lines. It would be written as: Mesmer. Like the entire template could just be this one-liner single template. This would be the ultimate level of perfection for ease of writing/editing.
  • Using the math extension so I can list the "stats" like +150 power and +15% condition duration in between the name / trait points allocated and the actual hexagon traits shown.

  • Lots of extra templates have to be made on the first run through. I can do this on my own throughout the week. Might take a day or two. The template following is just an example, other versions won't work for now xP
  • We need our own "background" images, and trait size images. There are unique one's based on profession for the minor traits on intothemists at least. I know in PvP (in game) they're all just fire symbols.
  • Eventually............. HOVER TOOLTIPS?! I think it's very do-able with this method. Downside being that we have to create so many pages and update them ourselves when tooltips change. Up to us as a community to decide if that's something we're willing to do.

And here it is to look at :) I'm pretty proud of myself. Learned all sorts of weird wiki programming jazz. And the documentation isn't that great tbh haha. Be sure to hover over the icons and see the tooltip names, and you can click them to go to the wiki article too! Tell me what else we need!!! Chase (talk) 01:28, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

As a reference of what is typed to achieve what follows. Typed this to get...

<-- This creates the header, it's not required
<-- Trait Line|Profession|Points|minor-major
<-- minor indicated with _, but could be any character
    <-- see? we could have typed 1|_}} or 1|minor}}

One line version written as
Amazing work! I will see if we are allowed to use IntoTheMists background images since I won't be able to create our own due to not having Photoshop on this computer. Also, would you like me to intall the math extension?--Galaxian (talk) 09:51, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I have just tried to get in touch with the IntoTheMist guys but 2 of them havent been online since a long time nor can they receive messages on the forum. My last shot is to wait and see if one of them accepts my Skype request.--Galaxian (talk) 10:06, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
If we cannot use it, I have photoshop and can try to work on it too. The Math extension as well as StringFunctions are both something I want to experiment with. Other's I was looking at but didn't have a direct use for now (but may in the future) were Loops and VariablesExtension. Lastly, is there a way to control who uses these extensions? The math and stringfunctions are fine, but there are some others that are a bit more powerful. Looking forward to re-hauling this aspect of the wiki soon! Chase (talk) 13:59, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Alright, I will try to install the extensions later unless they are really large (my current internet is limited -.-). Some of the more powerful extensions can be restricted for everyone but admins, just like the abusefilter.--Galaxian (talk) 14:38, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Could you check if the math extension is working as it should be, I have installed it but I am not sure if the paths are correct. The StringFunctions should also be working since most of them are part of the ParseFunction extension which was already enabled.--Galaxian (talk) 16:31, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Okay, I will be sure to check both of them out later today if possible. I might not be free until the weekend :/ Thank you for installing them! Chase (talk) 18:25, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
So turns out I had the wrong extension for math <(。_。)> that is my bad. But I got it to work with the expr template in the parser functions so good thing you had that installed :) This should be pretty good now. I might start working on the tooltips with tahiri or perhaps the background images etc. I also worked on a condensed version of the template, not sure if that's important or not to us. But it's quite compact ^_^ Chase (talk) 19:31, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, last thing I forgot to say is that I stole a mesmer icon for shatter recharge in Illusions line from gw2skills. We apparently don't have that icon even on the official wiki. So not sure what to do about all that. Chase (talk) 19:32, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Alright, no problem, I will just leave the math extension, we might need it in the future. Feel free to edit any template if you feel like you can make it easier to use/understand or better looking, you are doing a great job on the traits project.--Galaxian (talk) 22:17, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

PvE Meta[edit]

There are a few builds that are quite obviously the "meta" build for classes in PvE Dungeons. Will we be following the same method as we did on PvP to organize them, or will there be a voting procedure this time around? Chase (talk) 13:51, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Meta builds should be moved straight to the meta section. Great/Good builds should also be moved to those sections from the beginning until we get a larger userbase.--Galaxian (talk) 14:38, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Gear Template[edit]

Hey, after traits, I will be looking at gear templates. This isn't something I will work on until next week I believe, so there's no rush. I just want to start the discussion early. The way I see it, in high-level PvE dungeons and in PvP there are really only one type of stats, rune, and (if PvE) infusion type used. It is currently more work for our editors and readers to look at 6 different slots of the same armor type for head, shoulder, chest, arms, legs, and boots. It would be better (imo) to list it once as we do in PvP. To do so, I think we should have "icons" or "colors" associated with different stats so that readers can tell at a glance what is being used.

Even if we decide to have 6 different slots (because the armor was mix-and-matched) it will still be easier for the reader to see 4 red boxes as berserkers and, say, 2 pink boxes as valkyrie. So getting colors/icons either way is going to benefit us in either model. Here are the different stats possible for builds currently, colors based on PvP amulets first:

  • Berserker's (Red)
  • Zealot's (Gray)
  • Soldier's
  • Valkyrie
  • Rampager's
  • Assassin's (Yellow)
  • Knight's
  • Cavalier's
  • Nomad's
  • Settler's
  • Giver's
  • Sentinel's
  • Shaman's
  • Carrion
  • Rabid
  • Dire
  • Winter
  • Giver's Weapons
  • Cleric's (Blue)
  • Magi
  • Apothecary
  • Celestial (white-pinkish purple)

Feel free to edit the list with what you believe would be a good color xP Chase (talk) 14:08, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

A better format for gear for PvE would be amazing! But sometimes there are two viable gear combinations for meta - mainly just berserker's/assasin's distributions. For non-meta and especially for WvW, people come up with all sorts of things, so I don't know if trying to unify a whole gearset under one name is a wise idea. I'd recommend with staying 14 (2 weapon/6 armor/6 trinket) slots for those different builds as well as uniformity across other PvE build platforms that always present all 14 slots. Maybe make a table format with |weapon|armor|trinkets| columns? DEKeyz2Chaos (talk) 06:03, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, people definitely like to mix-and-match. I was planning to make two templates, one for that purpose and one that quickly tells people, all your weapons/armor/trinkets are berserker's. Might just switch it between PvE/WvW and PvP if it's not readable. Also welcome aboard :) Chase (talk) 13:25, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Voting guidelines[edit]

I would recommend setting up some hard and fast rules about voting + when a build goes from testing into a rated category. On PvX we had a whole policy page called Real Vetting. Also, I'd think about changing the rating ranges on categories. Something like 3.5->4.5 for Good and 4.5+ for Great. Trash anything 3.5 or less. Those were the rating scales we used for most of PvX's history, we only changed the rating scales very late in the game (around 2010 I think) when the meta was pretty much set in stone, there weren't new skills, and balance changes weren't happening regularly. We wanted to reduce the number of random theorycrafts maiing it through the vetting system. a 3.5->4.5 & 4.5+ rating scale would much more accurately reflect which builds are Good and which are Great.--TV Thief Icon.jpgTahiriVeila(talk) 05:10, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Honestly, I'd be even more lenient. There are already some builds below 3.5 that should be in the Good range still. I would probably say 3.0 - 4.0 = good, 4.0 - 5.0 = great. Or we should require more votes before we start showing a tag. Like 5 votes minimum or something so the numbers can be better gauged. I'm also gonna look into why the templates don't just auto-update based on the votes. But I do like the idea of requiring a minimum of 5 votes or something. Chase (talk) 13:36, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
As an update to this, check out this page for wells backline in zerg. It's scored a 3.00, is said to be in the great range of 4.75 to 5.0, and is in the meta xP Chase (talk) 14:02, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
Can we get half point for voting? like 1;1.5;2;2.5;... and, the builds really need more votes, right now there are 4-5 votes for each build wich isn't really accurate since those are used for tons of people. Why don't you make a post on reddit/official forum asking people to vote. While this could get some random to vote without really checking the build, someone who read the forum/reddit and bother to come here and vote shouldn't be a new player. It's something easy but would help a lot. --Billaboong (talk) 09:41, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Love the short URLs[edit]

Love it muki. Good job :D Chase (talk) 15:09, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Finally managed to add short URLs without breaking the uploaded files :D--Galaxian (talk) 15:15, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Is it safe to work on my templates now?? >:) Chase (talk) 15:17, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Yeah I guess so, haven't managed to find any errors yet so everything seems to be fine.--Galaxian (talk) 15:21, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

New Traits Template :)[edit]

A very big thank you to DEKeyz and Galaxian for helping out!

1. Traits = Template Name
2. Class = Profession (E.g. Thief, Mesmer, Guardian)
3. 66002 = Trait allocation. Examples: 40406, 04550
4. Traits = Each trait line is separated with a pipe (|) symbol.
Inside each trait line, the minor and major traits are separated with (/) symbols
Minor traits can be indicated with "-", as "minor", or any word/symbol as long as it's not "|" or "/"
(I think " " is also excluded from possibilities)
Major traits are indicated with their respective trait number in capitalized Roman Numerals
Thus, -/III/-/X/-/XIII is allocating III, X, XIII into the first line
-/VI/-/IX/-/XII is allocating VI, IX, XII into the second line
                  |||-/V skips two trait lines (they are empty between the pipes) and
is allocating V into the fifth trait line.

What we still have left to do is getting verification on the trait backgrounds or coming up with some of our own. We could work on getting better icons too for the stats. Lastly, we should go through the thirty builds we have and replace them with the new system when we're ready.

If there is a problem with any of these and you know where to find it you can use this page as a list of bookmarks to find and fix it.

This was a very serious amount of work. DEKeyz and Galaxian really helped out here, thank you again ^_^ Here are the PvP meta builds in the new format (well, you know Ranger...)

Any word from IntoTheMists? I am not sure whether we're allowed to put this on the main pages otherwise. Let me know if I should perhaps start looking at alternative methods of getting background images ^_^ Again thanks to both of you for all your hard work Chase (talk) 23:44, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

2 of the IntoTheMists admins aren't available at all and the third one haven't accepted my Skype invite yet, 2 days have passed by since I sent that invite though. We will most likely need to get other images since I don't think I will be able to get in touch with them.--Galaxian (talk) 23:53, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

New Trait Templates are UP![edit]

Here is an example:

Main BuildAdeptMasterGrandmaster

Can't find such trait "Elementalist"! Please refer to our trait index Can't find such trait "Elementalist"! Please refer to our trait index Can't find such trait "Elementalist"! Please refer to our trait index Can't find such trait "Elementalist"! Please refer to our trait index

Can't find such trait "Elementalist"! Please refer to our trait index

Note the addition of a "title" parameter and "link" parameter. In multi-trait builds you can signify a title for each one. When editing a build, if you see a link parameter and you've changed it, either update the link yourself, or delete it so viewers aren't mis-informed. Chase (talk) 17:29, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Good job with the trait template and editing all the builds guys! I am trying to add the "Top of the Page" link to the sidebar but it doesn't display anything, I have no idea why. I have disabled the spam filter, you can try and edit that link if you know what the issue might be.--Galaxian (talk) 17:42, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
Haha, didn't know that you could add links like that :D--Galaxian (talk) 17:43, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
Sadly that small tidbit still isn't working haha. I have a crude replacement up, javascript must be disabled I supposed. Apparently we can write jquery functions for mediawiki though? If so, that could get interesting... Chase (talk) 18:14, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
I have never worked with Javascript or JQuery so I am afraid that I won't be able to help with the coding :/--Galaxian (talk) 22:13, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Updated to include locked traits Chase (talk) 15:55, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Muki, we'll have to install the gw2 font on this server sometime. It happens to bug out every once in a while and fail to load any of the text related to it. Also it doesn't even work on macs. Not sure about iPads/iPhones, but I could check those too later. Chase (talk) 16:04, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

New categories[edit]

Hey, what do you all think about some categories like "Thief" or "Thief Meta Builds" so that we can see a list of all thief builds or all thief builds that are in the meta category without having to worry about PvE, WvW, or PvP. I thought of this idea when I was looking at the community guidelines/formatting article. It would be a lot easier for people to look through a list of all "profession" builds to see if the build already exists and can be modified. Chase (talk) 21:57, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

I was actually going to suggest this earlier today since a guy on Reddit asked for something like this (old PvXwiki had it too). I would also like to point out that I really like your frontpage design Chase/Sandbox. Feel free to finish the design and add the profession categories and we will see what others think about it :)--Galaxian (talk) 22:25, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
I like the new categories so far, but when I view a list there's no way to tell if a build is for PvP or PvE unless it's already specified in the build title. Is there any way to organize by PvE/PvP/WvW on those pages? - DEKeyz2Chaos (talk) 13:44, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Agreed. We'll have to look into some method later. I'm also starting to get annoyed that some builds will crossover directly from PvP to WvW Roaming. But they should still be voted separately (I think...). Gonna be confusing O_o Chase (talk) 15:57, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Yeah this was an issue in the beginning with an engi build. But we've realized that we should just split the build into 2, 1 for wvw and 1 for pvp, because of many reasons, like the gear differencies for example: WvW is using the PvE stats and in PvE you can get higher stats than those of the PvP amulets plus you can mix gear - another problem is that PvE has some stat combos, runes, and sigils that Pvp doesn't, for example Dire stat, Perplexity Rune, Sigil of Torment. WvW also allows the usage of food and the playstyle is really different there mainly because they don't have to worry about contesting capture points (we'd have to write separate guides for the same page), even the meta is entirely different. So we've decided that it's just a lot less confusing to split the build into 2 separate ones - there aren't that many crossovers afterall, no need to worry about it.--Hanz (talk) 17:43, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Request from Redditor about PvE builds[edit]

"I got a request.

Can you discuss to your team about deleting all the General PvE builds? They are not really General PvE builds but dungeon builds. After all, They were designed for dungeons in mind.

What I want to look for in a General PvE build is a balance of speed, tagging, and dps. It uses more selfish skills rather than group skills because not every PvEr sticks together. Dungeon builds are designed with other players playing with them.

Most of the dungeon builds look only at DPS as there is a specific playstyle(stacking) for it. PvE playstyle is about killing everything in sight and move on as quickly as possible."--Goruu (talk) 21:12, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

I personally agree with this. Currently there is almost no point to the PvE section, and I really don't think dungeon builds are actually good for PvE. PvE is just so easy that anything can really fly. I usually run a more mobile version if I have to do map completion (Which I don't. Thank god.) or if I'm doing guild missions, and want to find a bounty, again more mobile. There are also builds for world bosses that focus on using soldier's gear as they can't be critically hit. These are all (imo) better examples of PvE builds than the dungeon builds we've lumped into there. What do you all think about separating the two a bit more? Chase (talk) 20:54, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Agreed that most of the current PvE builds are not very PvE friendly, so the PvE section needs some culling. Possibly rename it to "Open World" or something that is clearly NOT dungeons but still PvE? DPS Guardian, 6/5/0/0/3 Warrior, and Staff ele (modulo some skill tweaks) are open world meta, though. Also, there are some World Boss builds (I think still in testing) that should be there. When I get a chance I will put up my "Tag Everything!" optimized DPS staff guardian build, Ele D/D (or/F) open world build, and and said staff Ele tweaks to help flesh out an open world PvE section. -DEKeyz2Chaos (talk) 22:06, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

All builds would fit the "Open World" section. I agree that there aren't really PvE meta since PvE is a huge set of differents thing.

Well sure, you can run around naked and with no traits in open world PvE and still do fine (though everything will take a while) - but there could be use in disseminating good builds to the community. People still ask me "what's good for leveling/open world map completion?" from time to time, so there is a market for open world exploration builds. And of course, we all want the rare drops from Teq/Wurm, so that's a build family where you can't crit and want to do lots of damage. Finally, there are zerg event builds where you can crit and damage doesn't necessarily matter (but you still want to be efficient) but you want some capabilities to tag lots of stuff. I guess that's three primary categories - or two if you go with "Open World Exploration" and "Group Events." -DEKeyz2Chaos (talk) 13:39, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
I like the idea of PvE Meta being the best way to do casual things ;) There are still efficient ways to be casual. Less clicking, less worrying. These things can be "meta" in a way. Open World Bosses should have their own section, if even in just the build name. I think we should have a list of "running" builds to cross maps efficiently for capturing waypoints/vistas/running around hearts. And lastly, I think the tagging in a zerg build is pretty good idea too. not saying these all have to be separate if some can be combined that'd be good too. I tried to do one for mesmer running/tagging. Idk if that was a good idea or not, but it seemed to be unique enough. I purposefully left it very open-ended and offered choices that were not DPS max but instead were "casual" friendly. Chase (talk) 16:00, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

WvW Zerg Builds[edit]

The builds in this section are going to be a challenge. Every guild runs their own variations of the Guardian, Warrior, Ele, Necro for their core compositions. Along with a 1-2 Mesmers for utility and a few Thieves for pressuring backlines in GvGs. So when it comes to a consensus on what the builds should exactly be we are going to have disagreements and people are going to vote builds poorly for not being the same to what their guild runs. And their are actual differences between T1 and lower tiers like T6/T7. I used to be on Crystal Desert and I could easily get away with a Full Berserker's Staff Ele with offensive traits. Now that I'm on Tarnished Coast this is very difficult unless I dedicate myself completely to backline and I run defensive traits. --DantesS_P (talk) 16:38, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

I've been in multiple wvw guilds and they're all running basically the same "secret" builds for the four big classes. The variations are usually covered even in intothemists builds. I agree with what you're saying about the T1 -> T7 difference. Not sure how to tackle that. Something tells me that it's more gear dependent than traits. Also hoping that those lower tier voters are not "bashing" on good builds but simply don't care which one is the best cuz anything can really work. In the end our meta section should be for T1-3 servers and the rest of our voting can be based on what happens next. We don't really know which way it'll go until it happens. Chase (talk) 17:32, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

Fractal Guide[edit]

KING guild did an awesome job with this Youtube playlist. It has a detaield guide for all dungeons, is there any way to implement it on this wiki? --Billaboong (talk) 09:48, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Other people have done fractal guides that don't promote exploits, and KING wipes to trash traps in AC story :) Moreover, is a pretty good community-driven dungeon resource already. -DEKeyz2Chaos (talk) 13:23, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Agreed that a website for this purpose already exists in a better way. I think we could have fractal specific builds that link to gw2dungeons and other video guides if needed on here. Chase (talk) 16:02, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Later we will need a Guide section somewhere I guess. Not for builds, those already have the perfect place on the associated build's page, but for things in general: maybe Teq, fractal, dungeon, PvP basics, WvW zerging, things like this. These things can wait but may need a place in the future. We could make some of these link directly into another site that already has a guide while writing our own guides for other ones. --Hanz (talk) 17:56, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Mobile version[edit]

I know it's not number one priority but it would be awesome to get a mpre friendly monile version of the wiki. I'll be using it only with cellphone for the mext weeks and there's one big issue. The menu on the left (with the MetaBattle logo, Navigation section etc) follows you while browsing amd gives zoom problems. The big deal is that sometimes it gets ober your screen and when you want to click something "under" it you just end up somewhere else on the wiki. Here are two screens --Billaboong (talk) 14:08, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

I'll check it out when I get time. Been pretty busy with work and family the past week, not to mention the site kept acting up whenever I wanted to do any work on it xP Chase (talk) 18:31, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Found another visual bug. The line of the categories on the front page are misaligned. --Billaboong (talk) 21:09, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

I don't get any of these. Everything works perfectly for me. Maybe connection issues? --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 06:58, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Tried to use some other browser. Currently using an iPhone 5S: Safari gives problem; Mercury gives problem; Puffin gives no problem. Note that Puffin is a mobile browser running Adobe Flash Player. I have no idea if this might be a reason but I'm on a vacation in the USA while I usually connect from Europe.

--Billaboong (talk) 14:48, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

I don't know if it's possible to add such thing in a Wiki but a notification system would make it much easier to track your changes. Something like "user xxx wrote something on a discussion your following" "user xxx rated your build". Instead of checkong everytime all the pages you've commented. --Billaboong (talk) 01:12, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Check off the "watch this page" button--TV Thief Icon.jpgTahiriVeila (talk) 01:51, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
I was hoping for something more user friendly, like you open MB main page and see a dot if there's something to read and as you open the notification center you click and you get directly to the page. Something like Facebook's notifications
Not sure how feasible/worth it that is with mediawiki tools. I feel like the combo of the watch list and the recent changes list is more than sufficient for most needs.--TV Thief Icon.jpgTahiriVeila (talk) 22:09, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Voting improvements[edit]

Can we have the voting not directly shown\ after we move a build after testing. It will keep people from messing with the ratings when they dislike a single thing about a build, Engineer - Tool/optional kit one example. And after we move a build out of testing it doesn't need to be voted on anymore. Also a way for Admins to reset votes if we want to relook at builds that didn't receive the rating it deserved due to the original submitter poor choices, Elementalist - WvW Staff. Or if the build can be overhauled to make it more favorable at a user's request, Warrior - Color Guard Frontliner. --DantesS_P (talk) 17:26, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

I actually like the idea of closing voting after the testing phase. I will see what you guys think about that and make the needed changes once I get home, in about 2 weeks. I won't be able to work on the website during those two weeks but I will make sure to once I get back.--Galaxian (talk) 14:46, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

There really need to be more votes, some builds just have 2-3 votes and one is 5 stars just because the creator want to make it famous. More votes should make builds more accurate. --Billaboong (talk) 01:14, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Delete Dungeon builds in General builds?[edit]

It has been a while, Mostly the people who discussed it are in favor of it. Can someone delete it or does someone here wants to object it?

Don't forget to use your signature, it's on the toolbar above this textbox. On the topic: valid point, maybe dungeon builds should just stay in the Dungeon section, and let general have things like gathering. And bearbow. Never forget bearbow. But then we should also have a World Boss category at least, because we need a place to move those builds to. Wait a day with it. And I guess under "delete" you mean "remove general tag" :D --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 18:52, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Let's remove dungeon builds from general, get more world boss builds before making that category. I'll work on a thief one ^_^ Chase (talk) 19:41, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Glad to hear it :P I have totally no idea for Thief and that's the only one missing. All I know is that you must have Assassin’s Signet, Smoke Screen and Thieves Guild. Maybe S/P? Btw tomorrow I will upload 1-2 builds on Teq Turret Defense. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 19:50, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Actually thieves have a lot of variance in their builds. They're not really utilized well, but for people that are hardcore thief mains, it will benefit them. There are some common pieces in the builds. I'll try working on it tomorrow after I can get the basis of the hover tooltip template down. I have all the big pieces ready, just waiting on Muki to get me access to install them. Chase (talk) 00:22, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

New background + logo?[edit]

I have been working on the background image a bit today, feel free to check it out here: or feel free to use the chrome inspect tool to see it in action. I think that it would be really good to have something similar to the GW2 art style, what do you guys think? The logo will also be changed, need to start working on that one too.--Galaxian (talk) 19:13, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

I was a big fan of the teal xP But I do like the artsy-ness. Here's the teal version:

Teal looks good too :) Let's see which one other people prefer.--Galaxian (talk) 19:27, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Teal's not bad but Galaxian's one matches GW2 more. Maybe we could use teal during wintersday xP --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 19:31, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Love the blue one! It totally matches the logo and defenitily makes the page more gw2's art friendly. Yoh might wanna consider using the red one combined with a re colored red logo.--Billaboong (talk) 01:16, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Plan is to replace the logo too. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 06:59, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Alright, tell me what you think about this: Would love to make those changes tonight if you guys like it.--Galaxian (talk) 19:43, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

I like it :D Tho the gw2 PvX wiki part should be more visible, blends in too much currently. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 19:50, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Alright, another problem with the logo is that if we keep it static like the current one, it won't be visible when scrolling down.--Galaxian (talk) 19:52, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm not a fan :( There's no logo, and therefore our favicon would probably be some boring letters. Also too blocky for my liking. Doesn't really fit as well as the text we have now I think. I prefer to use the styles and fonts of GW2 like the art brush and text what not, but prefer the color separation. Reminds me that I'm not on the official wiki and that I'm on a different website that is analagous to it. But yeah, logo is defs too hard to read right now. Hard to think of what to do about the static aspect Chase (talk) 19:59, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Here's one fix: Set the background image to also be fixed xD Chase (talk) 20:05, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
background: url( fixed no-repeat 0 0;
And you can delete the other background lines if you want. Chase (talk) 20:06, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I will see if I can find someone at Fiverr who can create a unique logo since I am out of ideas :D I will post it in a few days once I get it.--Galaxian (talk) 20:11, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
If we are at it, yeah a logo with an image is more appealing :P Let's try to brainstorm some if we can (while keeping it related to the franchise). --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 20:17, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm a big fan of what we have already. It's neutral colors, turquoise tranquility and grey-tone implies facts/data (instead of the "in-your-face"/aggressive red of the wiki), and the icon is like crossed arrows/swords/weapons, very battle like. Is there a reason we're trying to change it? Feels like one of those 'Don't change it if it ain't broke' kinda things to me, plus it will help my health to not see all this red everywhere xP Chase (talk) 21:00, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I like teal too but it's not really GW2-ish. I look at it and I don't see the essence of #e-sport. A logo with a better resolution that also grasps the feeling of watching a sunset in Ascalon, with a slight chilling breeze passing through the woods easing the pain of soldiers returning from battle, drinking a glass of wine after the victory, taking a last glance at the now calm battlefield. That's what it should feel like to bask in the glory of the logo! Or something like that but actually achieveable. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 21:23, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
That sounds epic! I wonder what that might look like too :) Chase (talk) 22:06, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

So any new ideas, anyone? :P What direction should it take? Just some ideas (basic outlines): a spellbook - symbolizes all the infos on the site. Or something that refers to battles, maybe weapons or a banner? --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 15:19, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

An open contest still sounds like a good idea to me, you could add a prize to get more people to work for it. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 15:31, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

Searching Engine[edit]

After discussing on a build with an user it came to my attention that while searching you can't define if the build is WvW, PvP or PvE. It would be nice to get a light color on the background of the name while searching or a little written in italic.--Billaboong (talk) 09:25, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

I doubt newbies would get what those colors mean in the first place. Besides, there are some lot more important things to do right now IMO :P And on the prev topic, we have identical weapon sets that can't have the same names, so adding an extra "roamer" or something tag is necessary anyways. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 09:49, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I've updated all pages to include these categories (I think). You can now peruse all profession builds in that manner. Take a look at the guardian here. This is accessible via the "Builds By Profession" section at the bottom of the main page. Trial and Testing builds are currently excluded. Chase (talk) 20:02, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
gg nice one :P --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 20:23, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
awesome work! --Billaboong (talk) 20:54, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Levelling Builds[edit]

Here I am with another of my ideas: adding levelling builds. They eould probably need a different layout because the more levels you gain the more you're build will grow, so something like 0-20 use this traits, 20-40 unlock this ik this order, 0-60 unlock this and buy this set of armor/runes and once you are level 80 find a proper build. There would also need space explaining wich combos you can make at each stage. There are many videos around so it would just be about implementing those works on the Wiki. Of course that's not number one priority but in the future it would be cool, if you like the idea I'll start working on it on the next days. --Billaboong (talk) 00:30, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Cool idea for sure. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 01:12, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
I think that we should add leveling builds/guides ASAP, that's another large audience that we should be target. My thoughts: Let's take GS guardian leveling guide as an example, we should create 4 different pages for that build, one called "Build:Guardian Greatsword (Level 0-20), another called "Build:Guardian Greatsword (Level 20-40) and so on. Users can easily navigate between those pages to find everything they need to know for each level. What do you guys think?--Galaxian (talk) 10:02, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
I started a levelling build for Guardian tought I stopped editing it because of other priorities. Feel free to continue, I agre it would get a big audience to Metabattle but wait for the incoming parch because it will change a lot the way of levelling up. Not sure about splitting in different pages instead of one big page with navigation menu.

Embedding Videos[edit]

IMO this is a needed feature (for guides). I'm also thinking about adding some basic PvP guides in the near future. Something like Gw1 PvX wiki's? . --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 08:38, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

For single videos I think that's a great idea :) But if we end up doing this for multiple videos on the same page we should check if it will slow down loading or not. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 13:27, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Still waiting for this features so I can start my animation guide ;) --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 15:30, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

  • If the name of the thing goes on two lines it breaks a bit
  • If the height of the screen is so small it can't fit upwards or downwards it kinda breaks
  • Left right is good; Right side has a little buffer that's messed up though
  • I can't seem to figure out how to link to the gw2 wiki for the words part (label) -- If you have any ideas please let me know.

Worked hard on this, but it's really just the tip of the ice-berg. If we end up seriously pursuing this it will take a very long time and a lot of work to complete. So this is just a stepping stone into a much bigger world. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 13:59, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Not going to lie, your Latin filler freaked me out for a second. I was like Grenth, is Chase writing in tongues now. But anyways looks great so far. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 14:37, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
That looks great! Feel free to work on it from time to time, no need to rush it. I won't be able to help with the JQuery coding but I will gladly help with the skills db/templates just like we did with the traits. Also, would it be possible to create templates for each skill where for example cd, casting time etc. is pre-set and then you just display it if it exists instead of typing it in the template call?--Galaxian (talk) 19:25, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
That's what it currently is, if I'm not mistaken. By default steal will show a 35 second cd, but we can change it since it is a modifiable variable in template call. Did you mean that or somethign else? Sidenote: These templates are meant to be used inside other templates or in paragraphs/bullet points. So they currently act a bit wonkey unless used inline with text for now. If we're cool with this, I'll draw up the manual for creating all sorts of tooltips and let you guys have fun with it :) « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 00:43, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
Oh, will be inside another template so that you don't have to fill in the cd etc. every time you want to display the tooltips? If yes, that's pretty much what I ment. I will gladly help with adding every skill if you can write a short manual. Btw, what do you mean that it acts wonkey unless used in inline with text, everything seems to be working fine with the examples that you showed above?--Galaxian (talk) 09:28, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
Well, if you didn't put the cd in there, it would default to 35 seconds. I'm not sure how we can possibly control the cd without having to type it in there or creating multiple templates. In the first example here it's just the normal , then I add the parameter to say, yes bountiful theft is on, so you can see we can add custom lines to the thing based on that. Then the third example is normal with a cd modified. Fourth one is both cd, size of icon, bountiful theft'ed, and with a label. Fifth one shows that no matter what parameters you end up using, if you say "textonly" it will only show text. If I put them like this without whitespace in between they come on a single line. That allows us to place these in other templates such as a skillbar properly (hopefully!), and also allows us to further improve on other aspects that we may endup using like skill rotations/combos. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 14:52, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Skills/Thief/Steal Skills/Thief/Steal Skills/Thief/Steal Skills/Thief/Steal Skills/Thief/Steal

I believe that what you got so far will work just fine, do you think that we should start working on adding all the other skills and make the tooltips official?--Galaxian (talk) 15:25, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
I would recommend we start with major tooltips since we have all that in place. We can start working on skills too, and I'll start working on new skill bar. Once I'm sure I don't need any modifications, I'll go ahead and open up the skill creation as well. Pasting the guidelines for the traits now in a new section. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 17:53, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

"Guide" prefix currently doesn't exist. We will need one (like "Build:" "User:" etc.) --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 16:02, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Mmmh, not sure if making guides skills based is good, the same spots for Phase Retreat can work for other teleport skills. I think it should be "guide map X" and then split in the page all the tactics and good palces to kite. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 21:19, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
I like that idea more, people can click a map and be like ohhhhhhh this is all the shit I should figure out for my class or in general for a player. Things like when buffs come up and what they do or what the treb is how to repair it, good portalling for it etc. We can split it up into general tactics and then profession-specific, or we can break up the teleports a different way since they don't all work the same. Otherwise good work so far, I'm gonna see if we can use a method to show the pictures as lightbox in the same window instead of a new page. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 21:27, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
And maybe link the guide to any build that has skills related to it. Like putting the guide for Mesmer with staff under "Pro tips" or "Kiting tips". --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 22:48, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
That's interesting, I wonder if a meta will develop for certain professions on certain maps. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 23:13, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
Actually I've been thinking a lot about how to organize stuff :P I'm planning to make a "Teleport" guide for the maps, for skills like
Infiltrator's Arrow Infiltrator's Arrow
Infiltrator's Arrow
Fire an arrow and shadowstep to the target area, blinding nearby foes.
Blind.pngBlindness (5s): Next outgoing attack misses.
Book.pngNumber of Targets: 3
Radius.pngRadius: 120
Range.pngRange: 900
Blink Blink
Manipulation. Teleport to a target location.
Stun-Break.pngBreaks Stun
Range.pngRange: 1,200
Lightning Flash Lightning Flash
Lightning Flash
Cantrip. Teleport to target area.
Damage.pngDamage: 365
Book.pngNumber of Targets: 1
Radius.pngRadius: 120
Range.pngRange: 900
/ etc - they will be in the same guide. There are many reasons why
Phase Retreat Phase Retreat
Phase Retreat
Clone. Teleport away from your target, summoning a clone that casts Winds of Chaos.
Combo.pngCombo Finisher: Leap
Range.pngRange: 1,200
deserves its own one. For example while you can use almost all of these spots with your ground targeted teleport skills, most of the time you don't need to look for a tiny spot to successfully do the port, while some PR ports only work while you are standing in that one tiny spot facing the right direction. Plus there are spots that work with Teleport skills but not Phase retreat so it would be a mess to make them be in the same guide. Also, the goal of PR spots is to spare your
Blink Blink
Manipulation. Teleport to a target location.
Stun-Break.pngBreaks Stun
Range.pngRange: 1,200
for later use or get away if that's on CD so I want to avoid having them in the same guide because I'm afraid people would just go "ah no need to learn it I can Blink it". :P
Another part of it are the "Map Guides" - basically this is what you guys are talking about. My idea is to either borrow the gw2 wiki's associated page (because they cover the basics pretty well) and then expand it with basic tactics and general tricks or just make our own (but I'd prefer the 1st). When it's done, we can add the links of the Phase Retreat / Teleport spot guides to each map's page. What do you think? Edit: and yeah, a pop-up window would be great to have for the galleries ^^ btw if mouseover tooltips are too hard right now maybe we should drop the project for a bit and focus on other, probably easier QoL changes (maybe a better looking skill bar?)--Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 07:18, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
Seems a good point to make PR separated from the other teleport skills. For the map guides I agree on taking informations from the wiki but it would be nice to add those informations that only metabattle can offer such as "don't do Svanir at start" or "if they have one thief it will alwats tru to steal your Svanir" and suggestion on how to prevent enemy tactis by their team composition. I was also planning to make a guide with the main WvW tactis and one collection or videos with the main animation for all classes so that you know when and what to dodge, but I will do the last one only as video get well with the wiki.--Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 09:08, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm a big fan of gyfcat for short videos like animations. That would be pretty epic. I recall the first game had a project like that, but it was too difficult I suppose or I just never ended up seeing it come to fruition. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 00:46, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
Added "Guide" namespace. Seems like all of the guides that you guys wrote are broken due to the fact that you used the "Guide:" tag without it actually existing. I will try to recover them now.--Galaxian (talk) 18:57, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
Ty :P Maybe it's enough if you move them to another name that doesn't include a namespace, leaving no redirect behind, and then move them back to the original name? --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 19:04, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
Alright, everything should be working now. This is what I did: Removed the new "Guide" namespace > Removed "Guide:" from the page titles > Re-added the "Guide" namespace > Moved the guides to the new namespace. Feel free to report if you find any errors :D--Galaxian (talk) 19:14, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
So far so good. Btw any new ideas for the logo? :P --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 19:21, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
I will most likely pay someone at BHW forums or Fiverr to create a logo for us once I get home and post it here to see what you guys think. Haven't been thinking about it for the last few days actually :D Feel free to brainstorm some ideas and I will forward them to the designer.--Galaxian (talk) 19:34, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

While editing my WvW guide I noticed it's givingp roblems with Please define type parameter for Skill/Static Field. Available types: staff, hammer., seems like the wiki has a disimbiguation link so its givin problem with the image. Same problem with

--Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 00:08, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

You just have to check the disambiguation and then click the one you need. After that just look at the URL. For example you need to use "Static Field (staff skill)" to make it work. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 06:56, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

I can announce our first World Vs World Guide is ready! I put my heart into making this and hope it will be appreciated by the community. There might be some typing mistakes (english is not my native language) but the rest should be all right. Also, these Guides should be visible from the Frontpage, may I suggest adding a category Guide along with PvP, WvW and PvE? --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 16:40, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Please make a Build converter[edit]

It is simple, make a regular GW2 build website, and then press convert to Wiki button which will convert it to wiki style formatting. It is completely frustrating to make a build.--Goruu (talk) 01:51, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

That's a complete waste of our time. Please paste the link of your gw2skills website here or on the actual stub page where it needs to go and hope someone else makes it for you instead. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 13:27, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
Let's say you wanna make a nec build. You can just press edit on the top right of an already existing necromancer build (look for a build with similar weapons so you save time with that too), copy paste it into the empty build page you are about to create and then just adjust the stuff you need. You don't have to build from scratch :P --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 14:10, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
This might be more feasible once Anet introduces a template system for traits + utilities. In GW1, templates were translated into a chain of letters that corresponded to the player's skills and attributes: the game then saved all of your templates in the form of these codes in .ini files. The old [PvX had a decoder] that would translate the template codes into the wiki code for a template box (I think it was actually expanded to create a basic page for you as well at one point). If GW2 implements a similar system for storing trait + skills templates as copy/pastable codes, then it may be feasible to create a simple tool like PvXDecode. For now a tool like that would be difficult to code and would likely complicate the build-making process.--TV Thief Icon.jpgTahiriVeila (talk) 23:29, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

From metabattle-talk page[edit]

I can not edit any pages that were moved. When you moved the "Warrior GS Axe/Mace" To "Build:Warrior GS Axe/Mace" it no longer allowed me to edit. On top of that any build that was moved to the new area "Build:Blah Blah Blah" Can not be edited. Sorry if this is not how I contact you but I am new here and well really want to see this take off. So I wanted to inform you ASAP.

You are not supposed to edit the old pages that don't start with "Build:", you should edit the ones that start with "Build:". Have you tried that since I just tested it and everything works just fine?--Galaxian (talk) 22:26, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
My bad, I forgot to set the permissions. You can edit the pages now I believe.--Galaxian (talk) 22:26, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

It works now sorry if my edits aren't the best don't even know how to use this wiki stuff. I am just following the template.

It's fine, I am learning it myself since it's my first time working with the MediaWiki script.

Hey I was wondering if I could rename my build or do I have to create a new page and have the old one deleted. If it were to be renamable but only by you can you rename it "Warrior - DPS All Variants." From "Warrior - GS Axe/Mace." As I have added every possible variant for that build.

--DPS All Variants is awfully general. If the difference between the variants is weapons and traits, that generally is enough to do a new build for it. -PalwaJoko

I would say check the build out there really isnt a point in having a million different warriors build that only have one sigil different or 1 weapon different. I dont want to flood the wiki with 20 build that are all able to fit in 1 page with just variants, Some of my variants are as simple as using a sigil of undead while others are as hard as swapping some traits around. I just don't feel it deserves its own page as it would just flood the wiki. -JosePepowner

How to rename an article[edit]

You can rename an article if you would like to do so simply by clicking on the "Move" option at the top.

I don't see a move option anywhere. I have been looking and nothing. Its not under the tools either.

Use sigatures while discussing topics. There is a button for it above the textbox along with the other formating tools. About the 'Move' option, i think you might have to be a moderator to do that. Tell me which topic to rename on my Talk Page and I will do it.--Hanz (talk) 17:13, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Wiki cost and upkeep[edit]

This wiki is greatly appreciated, but i don't want it being dropped any time soon. How are you going to keep this hosted, are you planning on using advertisements etc to help with this?--Crazy 6:12pm, 2nd August 2014 (+10 GMT)

I own a dedicated server that costs me 200 USD per month for another website, for now I am hosting this wiki there. Second month will be different, I will be adding one ad at the top and hopefully it will be enough to cover those costs. I am however willing to pay whatever is missing if the ad doesn't bring in over 200 USD/month.--Galaxian (talk) 12:19, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

They should be added somewhere to the main page. Maybe chopping off half of the width of the "Learn about the website" box and add another box next to it to the right with these sections? --Hanz (talk) 16:24, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Please give me the links here, and I'll try to add it to the new version of the main page :) Chase (talk) 17:45, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Do we need this new look? The last one looked better IMO. :P Also, it seems like the pages for Trash/Archive aren't just not displayed but don't exist yet. --Hanz (talk) 17:59, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Srs concern: it looks really disorganized and rushed in its current form. What was the problem with the prev one? --Hanz (talk) 18:38, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
I lost internet connection. That caused some mess-ups. The reason for the change was that some people were complaining about the color of the meta / great / good on the backgrounds :( More importantly it's in CSS now so it'll be easier to change :) Chase (talk) 18:58, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
kk :P Tho the "Untested" category just doesn't fit. A suggestion I think the tables below the Pvp section should be further separated by something, maybe a line or a similar solution to this with another overarching background color. And maybe an icon (in a similar way as seen on the link to gw2 wiki) for the
  • "Learn about the website" could be: this --Hanz (talk) 19:15, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
  • "Builds by profession": Gw2 logo, some banner icon? No idea.
  • "Obsolete builds": this? (broken armor image, since these builds only make you lose and your armor breaks and yeah all that stuff, you get it)
Probalby there are ones that fit better, I'm just talking about the idea to have icons for them :P --Hanz (talk) 19:15, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
I love the repairs idea hahaha, will look into this later for sure :) Chase (talk) 19:36, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Head image and background[edit]

Just a suggestion, maybe the head image (the one shown above the url, on the browser page) should be changed to something gw2 related along with the background of the main page? --Hanz (talk) 19:24, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Do you mean the ficon? I won't be able to create a custom one since I don't have Photoshop on this computer. I can however upload one if someone got some free time to create a GW2 related one and send it to me. I would also like to change the logo when I get home since this one was created in 5 min...--Galaxian (talk) 19:30, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Well let's ignore the favicon until the new logo is in place. I actually liked this logo, but if you're thinking of changing it, we should wait for that haha Chase (talk) 19:35, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

World Boss Category[edit]

I think we will need one. I'm on to upload a Teq build for every class, then maybe Wurm is the next - that's at least 16 builds without a category, an own category would make it a lot easier for visitors to find builds for them. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 11:10, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Guides and Main Page[edit]

I'm going to start making some PvP guides today, mainly focusing on: rated play basics, phase retreat/teleport spots on each map, and Khylo tips and tricks (

Hunter's Shot Hunter's Shot
Hunter's Shot
Fire an arrow that grants you stealth when it hits an enemy. Your pet gains swiftness.
Damage.pngDamage: 149
Swiftness.pngPet Swiftness (10s): 33% Movement Speed
Stealth.pngStealth (3s): Invisible to foes.
Combo.pngCombo Finisher: Physical Projectile
Range.pngRange: 1,500

and many other skills work on some buildings, necs can build life force on buildings, and so on), so it's time to add a guide section (with categories PvE | PvP | WvW) :P This means the Main Page needs a place for this. Maybe the "News & Updates" table's align should be set to left, "Learn about the website" table could be moved up next to it to the right, and a new "Guides" table could take the place of the now empty spot of "Learn about the website". Also, the "Builds by professions" table seems a bit too long compared to others, maybe we should split the list into 2 columns similar to GW1 PvX wiki's. The next is just a matter of preference, could we have a background color for the tables of "Learn about the website | Builds By Profession | Obsolete Builds| Guides"? Would give the site a more organized look IMO, but it's just an opinion. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 10:08, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

To make it fit with the design I was thingking something like a green line with Guide: WvW - PvP - PvE - All and on the left Work on progress (the build is not done) and Testing wich means it is done by the creator but people should check it before making it official. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 16:09, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
What do you think about something like this Galaxian/Sandbox/Frontpage? Or maybe we could add another section called "Guides" under "Obsolete Builds"? I personally like the first example since we can expand the wiki at any time if we decide to add something else than builds and guides.--Galaxian (talk) 18:39, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
I for one love it :D It's a better solution than putting it below obsolete builds and thing like that. It's really easy to navigate and notice this way. Btw some guides already made it to the top of google :P --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 18:48, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
That's exactly what I meant! Go for it! And don't forget to post on Reddit/Official Forum when the Wiki gets such cool changes, it really helps its popualrity. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 20:58, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

Tooltips Project[edit]

Moved to Chase/Sandbox/Tooltips Project

My god, this takes a lot of time. Guardian major traits are completed, will continue with the minor traits tonight.--Galaxian (talk) 17:04, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
Wow! As soon as this works with all skills and traits it will deserve a public update post and it will be defenetily the thing to make MetaBattle as easy as in terms of reading the build. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 11:28, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Yep, we should focus on different guides and leveling builds once this is done. Guardian and Warrior traits are finished, next up is engineer.--Galaxian (talk) 15:02, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Edit: Quick question for Chase, do you have any idea how to create the "switch weapon" button just like in game?--Galaxian (talk) 15:04, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
I just finished Ranger and Elementalist traits. I wrote an quick and dirty application for that purpose that parses information from GW2 wiki and fills the data into my pre-configured templates. It will break with every wiki design change, but it helped me a lot to finish this now. My goal was to unify the look&feel to match the one in-game. We agreed with Chase that our aim is simple - the tooltips should look like the ones in game (except we will add space before durations, e.g. "Burning (5s)" instead of "Burning(5s)" that's in-game). Let me go through all other professions and I will use my scripts to unify the look&fell of all tooltips. If you guys prepare template for skill tooltips, I can write scripts to parse skills information from GW2 wiki and fill the templates - it will take some time, but I can do that. By the way, I volunteer for tooltip templates admin, if you want, I can manage and keep them up-to-date.--Eremko (talk) 12:45, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
All trait tooltips are done and their look&feel is now unified for all professions (lower/upper characters, base damage numbers everywhere (used PvP/WvW numbers for Confusion, in PvE it's just 2x that), spaces, "sec vs s", "seconds vs sec", unified the bonus icons (mainly Range vs Radius vs Book) - in game it's sometimes not unified and obviously bugged, I changed it so it just makes sense, I also fixed the classes for the div to be always correct (Traits-%PROFESSION%-Adept|Master|Grandmaster*), ... and many more unifications is now done) ... ufff, I think I don't wanna see trait tooltips for couple of days now :)
Excellent job Eremko. That was honestly the smartest way to do it, you saved us time but took up a big burden on yourself. Thank you so much. Take a break and rest! I won't bother you with skill tooltips for a while -- promise ;) « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 15:04, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

Last modified time[edit]

I have added a "Last modified time" to the meta/great/good templates which simply displays the last modified time for a build. I think that this is needed so that people can decide whether the build is up to date for them. Anyone disagrees with this or have improvement suggestions?--Galaxian (talk) 14:58, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

Does not work with some pages. For example: this one. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 15:12, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Not sure if that's enough, people will know if the build is up to date to the last patch, not when was the alst time someone modified the build, it might just be a small change and make people beleive the whole build is up to date. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 15:29, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Hmm this is a strange bug, are there any other pages with the same issue?--Galaxian (talk) 15:52, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
For some reason it's working now :D Btw idk if it's a good idea, we may have to do meaningless edits just to keep the impression that it's "up to date" even if we wouldn't need to change anything on a build for months. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 16:35, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
That was really strange, glad that it's fixed now :D I really think that we should keep this because there are people that are sceptical about how up to date this website is, example: I have seen similar questions on the forums too which is the reason why I decided to add this.--Galaxian (talk) 18:04, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Ah, k :P --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 18:45, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Sadly this won't "update" the build. Anyone can edit and make it seem up-to-date. However it is a very good start, I like the change very much. I would also like it if we re-opened voting on meta builds after a feature patch like this, maybe like 2 weeks after the patch has been around or maybe longer (Dantess should know better on when a new "meta" forms). Would be cool if we advertised that all builds are open to re-voting again or something, maybe get a more diverse opinion on what works. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 18:47, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

WvW Harasser Builds[edit]

"Harasser" is the definition for a player that in the Zerg has to kill all the ranged enemies (necros, eles, mesmers,) and is then running a roaming buiild. I've seen someone posting a harasser build under the Zerg builds. I feel like the harasser builds are just roaming builds used for harassing. Shall I delete copy of roaming builds named under "harassing" or, if nto existing, move them to the Roaming section? --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 20:21, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

PvP builds: gear part[edit]

A recent contributor simplified the gear part of a pvp build by basically removing the template and just simply listing the rune and the amulet. It's not a bad idea afterall, considering how you only have 1 rune and 1 amulet slot in PvP. I'm thinking about doing this to other PvP builds too, I'm just not a fan of randomly messing with templates so I thought I'd ask before I act. Opinions? --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 17:48, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

I could create a simple template called "PvP Equipment" where you enter name of rune + amulet. Chase could then improve it and maybe make it prettier with CSS.--Galaxian (talk) 17:59, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Hm I like the idea. Tho Chase owes me some pop-up windows for image galleries! xP--Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 18:09, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
:D Alright, you can use the template by entering: Superior Rune of the Soldier which displays:

TOO MANY THINGS TO DO!!!!! XD Yeah this was on my list, glad someone else stepped up -- thanks muki! Gonna get that popup for you hanz, don't worry :) « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 19:16, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

I like idea but remember to leave the link to the first and only rune, so a player that doesn't know what the run does can click it and go to the wiki. The same should be done with the gear: "soldier" isn't enough, many players don't know the categories by name so I suggest saying "Soldier, Power, Toughness, Vitality. To explain better I'll give the current guardian gear part and what I think should be like

  • ===Armor & Trinkets===

The best rune choice would be Superior Runes of the Trooper as they clear a condition off your party members when using a shout. However from a survivability standpoint Melandru runes make sense too.

The best rune choice would be

9/9 patch[edit]

I think all builds will need to get back to Trial phase and be discussed again. At least for WvW is easy since there aren't many builds. it's the easiest methdo to make sure all builds are up to date. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 18:35, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

I'm sure 1-2 minor tweaks won't affect 80 builds :D Let's see the patch notes first, and even then we should wait a day or two so people can try out things. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 19:55, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Ads and competitions?[edit]

I talked to Chase last night about a few ideas that I had and would like to get a few more opinions on this:

I would like to add a 728x90 banner at the top center of each page. Revenues will be used for:

1. Pay of server costs (isn't that much right now)

2. Host different community competitions (guide contributors? other competition ideas?) with gem code prizes.

BTW, I am experiencing css problems since the server transfer, what about you guys?--Galaxian (talk) 22:06, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

One thing about the competitions, while on the normal wiki you know what to upload, here let's say someone posts 6 builds and all of them ends up in the trash - that can be a really negative experience. Server costs gold IRL so I have nothing against the banner - the only ways to escape that would be: becoming official partners of Anet like the wiki, or Curse membership. Unrelated: how about a "Music" or "Instrument" category under the Miscellaneous section? So we could post songs for each musical Instrument like the Harp or Flute - these would replace the "Meta/Great etc" links in this category. We don't need "Testing / Trial" for these so we could merge it into 1 single row, maybe that would give us enough space to display the name of all of them, so marriner's Horn, Choir Bell and so on. If someone clicks one of these, it could directly lead to a single page where all the songs can be found - having individual pages for these are unnecessary I feel. Ideas? --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 12:35, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Hanz, you beautiful bastard. Of course musical instruments deserve their own metabattle. How will we show sequences of keys to hit? I'm not musically inclined, but I think it is an awesome idea. Also do you have skype? And if there is a way to show how much money we've raised and how much of it we need to pay the host we can show people how much the cash prize would be for competitions. Not to mention it would keep us "non-profit" to show that information as this is a volunteer project so far. People can be like oh wow this is what they need to raise and this is what they've raised. In addition that directly could lead to possible donations for bigger cash prize events. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 14:04, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
:D I don't have skype, always used TS. About the key sequences, on forums people just write 378-546-8756 and things like that, pretty easy to read and understand. They use () and [] if they want to mark lower / higher octaves. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 15:30, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Note sure if this is exactly the right place for this, but I noticed that the default settings for search only includes the Main namespace, and it should probably be extended to include Build: and Guide: (and maybe Archive:, but you can probably leave that one out) by default for all users since most will want results from those namespaces. Toraen (talk) 01:41, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

I didn't even know that you can customizer the search settings, will take a look into it when I get home. Thanks!--Galaxian (talk) 10:58, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
I never even used the search bar until you wrote this. Good catch! PS - Yes, you posted this in the correct place :) « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 13:54, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
I have added Build: and Guide: to the default search settings.--Galaxian (talk) 16:14, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

New admins?[edit]

I was thinking of posting a staff recruitment thread on Reddit, we are in need of 2 PvE admins and maybe another WvW admin (2 admins per section). Do you guys have any friends that are experienced in those areas that you think would be interested in helping out? Giving this a shot before I ask the Reddit community.--Galaxian (talk) 16:33, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

I honestly think we need many more players to vote builds than admins. Some builds only have 1-2 votes and it's not a reliable way of telling if it's good or not. I'm talking about the WvW section in particular. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 16:51, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
Admins are for moderating discussions, checking builds, reverting things, banning people and not really for voting, it's just that we are likely the most active while it comes to voting - we need more voters but that's not a reason for getting admins. Maybe we should have an extra box somewhere near the top that links to the newest builds that entered Testing? About the WvW section, maybe that had the least advertisement and least people involved - season's coming, maybe we could make a profit of that by advertising on borders and asking for contributions on reddit and the forum. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 17:21, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
I already dis it with Ranger and I think it's a good idea: something like "before starting the season, make sure to have the right build" and then add "spme builds still need your help, check them! So you get both upvotes for helping and attention to new builds. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 17:35, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

The idea behind having more admins on this wiki is just to fill each section with stuff that people can't complain about. By time, people will see the real value of this and they will most likely visit more often and hopefully rate the builds. As for now, we should focus on producing content and keep it up to date. Once the competitions kick off we should see increase in visitors. GW2 is willing to tweet our contests/major updates too which is a huge plus. The traffic has been increasing well over the last 2 weeks.--Galaxian (talk) 22:10, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

How is the new server?[edit]

Is it just me or is this new server loading pages really slow sometimes?--Galaxian (talk) 22:01, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

Very slow. Has been annoying the heck outta me xP « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 22:14, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, same here - it was a pain editing 160 trait templates yesterday with that response times :) --Eremko (talk) 10:32, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
Shall we try to get a better server and a donation system with a window on the top page and see how it works? --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 13:46, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
It's worse than the previous :P --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 17:49, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

Just a quick update, I have ordered a decent dedicated server last night. It's been almost 24h since I have done that and they haven't provided it yet. Usually it should take less than 24h which is getting a bit annoying because the current server is extremely slow.--Galaxian (talk) 18:17, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

Update: Just found out that they do not setup dedicated during the weekend, we will need to wait until monday...--Galaxian (talk) 20:01, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

Reddit Post, Sept 12th[edit]

Hey guys, I'm planning to write a post tomorrow announcing all our trait tooltips being implemented (just Elementalist and Ranger left!). A big thank you to Eremko and Galaxian for all their help on this project. It's a very big step to increasing the readability/interactivity of our site. What I'm planning to talk about are:

  • WvW Meta builds for Elementalist, Warrior, Guardian, and Necromancer (These need to be updated and spiffed up tomorrow!)
  • The need for T1 WvW Admins and some PvE Admins (Preferably dungeon hardcore speedclear/world boss experienced)
  • Our transfer to a new server
  • A 2,000 gem code raffle, eligible to anyone that creates an account, user talk page, and edits any existing build in a positive/helpful way (even grammar edits!). <-- Basically I'll say this, but any user with a user page will be eligible.

At this point I'll give a small simple tutorial on using the site and hope we get new content editors. I will also go into the "spirit" of the website in hopes of people not changing things but instead adding variants/choices to builds. Especially the usage section in most places suck.

Previously Jose was upkeeping our formatting guidelines and that was very helpful. I think in the next few months I'm gonna try to finish up all our basic tools for displaying a build (including a skill rotation template if possible) then we should try to create a "unified" experience. I'm really hoping to add to each page three things at the top that kinda overtly explain yes, this is a mesmer build. yes this is for wvw. yes this build has been rated for meta as a banner at the top. I know what we have is good, but I want it to be more color / icon based and more meshed with the designs. I will also if possible try to finally start working on designing the website with some of the gw2 themes/graphics. This is a tonne of things, and I do work every weekday, so I'm almost positive I will fail to get it all done in a month, but it's my goal, just leting you guys know, and hoping you have new ideas :) PS - I will be working with muki tomorrow to write up the reddit post, be sure to let me know if there's anything we're missing and we'll add it into there! « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 02:19, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

I just gave a look at the WvW zerg meta and except the guardian(haven't had time to check all changes) nothing really changed, there still is a variation I wrote on the Elementalist discussion (check it out please) and they'll be aready to be published. I still would likwe someone to doublecheck with all new changes before we post something we consider being Meta on Reddit --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 14:22, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
Food and Utility was missing on almost all of them. Re-did the elementalist for reading purposes. There are three variants of the Necro now, properly allowing new players to choose what works best for their play style. And updated the horrible gear choices on Guardian. Also re-did the trait variants on there to work with the new hoverable items for Warrior, Guardian, and Necro. (Will update ele when the trait hover tooltips are done on that too). Me and Galaxian are now working on finishing the traits on ele for WvW. This is what I meant by updating and spiffing them up with content and style ;) « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 17:15, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

We are live here for the reddit post now! « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 18:13, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Icons conflict[edit]

I was working on my guide and adding all siege's skills icons to the wiki. There is a problem with the icon of

. Anyone can solve this? --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 10:43, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

Is it just not letting you upload a duplicate file? There should be a checkbox to "ignore all warnings" when uploading if it fails the first time due to the wiki detecting a duplicate. EDIT: Well, I did it. Toraen (talk) 18:03, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 18:37, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

General PvE builds[edit]

Do you think we should retire this. I can't think of any builds that can even be placed in the Meta section. Everything that requires proper builds is already taken care of in the Dungeon and World Boss categories. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 15:39, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

Farming builds should go in here, however no one has been creating any. Now with champ train basically gone and blix event retired, I'm not sure what else besides running around a map can be included here which are equivalent to map completion builds. In general our PvE builds are not doing well in terms of updates or traffic. Our highest viewed pages are PvP builds. I think this is in part because PvP builds are easier to write/update. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 15:50, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Whoops! Forgot to include that leveling builds can go here too. We just don't have contributors / admins in this section « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 16:04, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Once started with a guardian levelling build but gave up because the patch changed everything and had more important things to do. You can easily take one from Youtube and make it fit the wiki but it's a lot of writing and work. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 16:09, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
I think the reason why PvP builds are more popular is that the build diversity isn't that big in PvE. Each class has like 1-3 builds. You can visit the site, pick a build and you don't have to change anything until another balance patch is released. While in PvP, each class has 3-8 builds with different playstyles, and you can pvp with a lvl2 character - so you can try out things whenever you'd like to. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 16:22, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I need to download the logo in the highest resolution possible for a video I'm working on, anyone can link it to me? --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 19:22, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

This is the original size: I never created a bigger one :/--Galaxian (talk) 19:53, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
I don't know what's the current situation but afaik the logo might change later, so maybe you should wait for that. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 13:38, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
While it's not perfect, this still looks better than the current one IMO :P Could we have it for a day and see how things turn out? While the logo part is not my fav, this design is a lot more Gw2ish. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 18:22, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
Why not a contest? By putting togheter gold we could easily give a 100 gold prize to the best one --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 19:39, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
1st - 100 gold may not be that appealing for most :P 2nd we'd have to pick one even if we don't even like it. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 19:46, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
I could add the new logo+background for a day just to test it out if everyone else agrees?--Galaxian (talk) 16:16, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
I doubt anyone would have anything against a test :P --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 19:08, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
Lmao I am averse to change. But I am okay for a one day test ^_^ « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 20:07, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

So can we do a test day? :p --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 17:27, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
Forgot about this :D I have changed it to the test layout, press CTRL + F5 if you can't see the new layout already.-- Galaxian (talk) 17:47, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
Awesome. Only downside is that we can't see the white logo on white if we scroll it :P Maybe it would be enough to just take the gw2 logo and then add a Gw2PvX text or something below that. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 17:49, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
Thats the only issue, I went ahead and set the background to fixed like Chase suggested before I think, how does it look now?-- Galaxian (talk) 17:57, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
Sec I'm looking up synonyms for "awesome". --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 18:05, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Temp Logo. Looks awesome but I can't really read the GW2 PvXwiki part. Mostly the GW2 part the 2 is almost completely illegible. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 19:01, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

I will try to make the slogan a bit more visible tonight or tomorrow. Do we keep this change or would you guys like to go back to the old design?-- Galaxian (talk) 22:25, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
I personally prefer the new reddish logo, it's more GW2-ish :) --Eremko (talk) 23:40, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
I got in touch with a logo artist and explained the ideas behind our site. Since we are more pvp/wvw based at the moment (and because the site is called metaBATTLE after all) we came up with one idea as crossed swords in front of the wvw tower in a stylized method. Obviously hoping for other ideas to come through, and we can offer other ideas as well. So as things develop I will post them here for you guys. Be sure to offer your ideas / feedback. Not sure on the timeline, but they said they'd start working on ideas/mock-ups this weekend. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 00:22, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

We are going to have to start writing down our specific policies. Outlining procedure for build vetting, trash/archive builds, deletion, etc. We are kinda winging it right now which isn't the best way to go about things. Here is the gw1 pvx policy page, don't copy it but use it for inspiration since we are trying to do a similar thing but for gw2. Here is the one for wikipedia, not very useful but can still give an idea on what we should do. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 14:49, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

I will take a look at this ASAP, will be busy the following 2 days though.--Galaxian (talk) 20:39, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Voting improvements[edit]

You guys already know I want the ability to reset votes. But original PvX also had a different voting system, there was an extra tab next to Build/Discusion called Rate where you voted. Here is a screenshot for Shockaxe vote page if you don't have a gwPvX/curse account. This puts some responsibility for your vote so you can't just troll vote and give it a low rating because everyone will see it. And it allowed admins to see and removed troll votes that people did anyway.

Another thing we should lower the bar for a build to become Great. Currently we are using the same rankings of as GW1 PvX 3.75-<4.75 is a Good build and 4.75-5.0 is a great build. It wasn't originally like that it was 3.5-4.5 for good and 4.5-5.0 for great. I wasn't around for when they bumped it up but I believe they did because there where no new expansion and fewer balance patches. And the community had exhausted the majority of build ideas. I suggest we move down to that scale of 3.5-4.5 4.5-5.0 to be more lenient to newer builds being added. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 15:17, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Do you know who coded the voting system for PvXwiki or anyone that is able to code this for money, I will pay. My php knowledge is limited, especially when it comes to the mediawiki system. I could probably code something similar but it won't be safe at all. Regarding the ranking, that was something that I was told a long time ago but forgot to ask you guys, should be change the limits?--Galaxian (talk) 20:35, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
I agree, getting over 4.75 is really hard, I also would add the option to vote with half points, like 3.5 and 4.5 etc.. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 21:13, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Better to allow us to vote 1-10. It's like having half votes but also on a better grading scale. Not sure how to do a rating system, but it's nice. Would be better if it were public. Also if the admins were given a diff color on there so people can see how many were users and others were admins. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 11:44, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
Dmitry Valberg, aka Gcardinal, was one of the founders of PvXwiki and its primary coder for the majority of the PvX-unique extensions, including PvX Rate, PvX User Ratings, PvX Recent Ratings, PvX Decode (for game template code input), and PvX Converter (for wikicode integration with gwbbcode). His original website,, redirects to his flickr profile. You might be able to contact him there or at his twitter - but it's been years since he coded PvX, so dunno if he'll be interested. A few other users are credited on a few of the unique extensions, like Hhhippo (who worked on the servers/backend before PvX migrated to Wikia). Łukasz 'TOR' Garczewski (wikia staff) coded PvX DownloadTemplate for downloading bulk build templates and helped with a few code touchups along the way (as the rating extension broke occasionally during mediawiki upgrades). Alexia E. Smith and Brent Copeland (curse staff) are also credited for some of the extensions (presumably updating them during/after the migration from Wikia to Curse).
A huge chunk of PvX's build template codes were taken from gwshack's gwBBcode. Something similar would probably have to be written for GW2 - maybe the newfangled GW2 API could be used instead? I'm not a coder myself, I haven't the faintest how all that magic works; I mostly just worked as a buffer between Gcardinal and the wiki community (people skills were not his forte). Good luck either way! -Auron 01:23, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
Alright thanks for the links! I will see if I can get in touch with someone.--Galaxian (talk) 16:16, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
I have tinkered with the rate extension myself, and it isn't very complicated (I got an old version sorta working already on a usb wiki). If you can't get in touch with anyone, I'll see if I can grab the up-to-date rate extension files from Curse again and try reducing it to one rating category (and make it 0-10), since Alex and I were working on that already (you probably don't want a 3-part vote, we certainly didn't in the end). Toraen (talk) 15:22, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
Don't know about (0-10) since we will just end up with (0-6) = varying degrees of bad and will be trashed, (7-8) good/decent builds, and (9-10) Great builds. Where a (0-5) gives us (0-3) = varying degrees of bad and will be trashed but (3) it might just need a overhaul, (4) good/decent builds, and (5) Great builds. With the (10) scale over half the scores are useless since they all just say the build is bad. And I've seen the what you guys have had to deal with the 3-part vote. I really don't want to deal with that bullshit. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 00:17, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
Tehcnically, half of the 5 scale scores are useless too xP but I personally haven't felt the need to do a half vote either so I think 5 is fine. The way I rate it's 1 -- trash, don't recommend; 2 -- below average, not good; 3 -- average, so-so; 4 -- above average, good; 5 -- excellent, meta. Not sure if I'm doing it right or wrong. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 04:04, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
I actually had a formal-ish set of definitions for ratings from 0-5 here, if you want to take any of the ideas from that. Toraen (talk) 11:40, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

External and Internal Links[edit]

Quick pro tip. You almost always want to use Internal Links over External ones when linking to other parts of the wiki. To make an Internal Link you use this Page Title use whatever name for the specific page you are linking to. If you want to change the name so it isn't awful to read like this Warrior - Hambow, insert a vertical bar | after the page name then your short name like this Hambow so you end up with this Hambow. If it's a category then you add a colon : before the page name so it doesn't put the catogory on the the page but as a link like this Meta PvP builds so you get this Meta PvP builds. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 00:15, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

One thing it's really botering me is the fact that whiel searching you will see pages that have been moved on the suggestions, an example is searching Guide and finding "Hot to be a successful pug" wich is onle redirecting to another page, I'm not sure this is the right solution but couldn't we just delete old pages? This would make the searching cleaner --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 15:11, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

I deleted it. When you are moving pages to change the name. Make sure you un-check leave redirect. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 15:57, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Unified Build Style[edit]

So we have a whole bunch of builds now and people are submitting new builds. But we don't really have a unified look for a lot of our pages. A lot of builds just have extra fluff that is not needed. Like you don't need to redundantly mention every slot single slot is Berserker. And if it's a build that uses mixed sets like most WvW builds you generally want to explain why you take X and Y with Z. And show the different benchmarks you want to keep in mind. So here are some generic test pages PvP Test, PvE Test, and WvW Test. Still working on them but they show the idea I want to get across. They look similar but still have room for different needs of each of the gametypes. --Human icon.png Dantes (talk) 17:59, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

I like it. Sorry I haven't updated any of the templates yet; Once we're done with the tooltips for skills, sigils, and runes there'll be a much better method to writing build pages. Ideally, aiming to allow people to post something like PvE into a page and saving it. Then they can re-edit it and the text will be the bare-bones for all the different weapon sets etc, and a user can just delete the parts they don't need. Imo it's faster/easier to delete things you don't need than it is to reference and type the stuff you do want. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 18:26, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
Really like the idea, make sure to lnk the WvW zerg fight guide under usage for those who are on the meta. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 19:05, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

For fun[edit]

Found this on reddit, some images might be good looking to implement on the wiki. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 18:19, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Logo ideas[edit]

Hey everyone, here are 3 "sketches" or ideas that we have so far for a potential logo:

Please offer your thoughts, or I will go ahead and ask to refine the first one with more of a paintbrush stroke style in keeping with GW2 artwork. It should be evident that the R and reyana is simply the author's watermark; it is separate from the actual logo design. « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 22:53, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

+1 for the first one. Maybe it would look better with a more iconic GW sword, like a Breath of Flame (aka gw1 Wingblade) or something like that. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 07:06, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
Also like the first one, would go for Bolt as crossed sword. --Warrior Icon Color.png Billaboong (billa-talk) 10:46, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
First and last one looks really good. EDIT: What about the background image, should we leave it white?-- Galaxian (talk) 17:09, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
I prefer this red thing we have right now, we can tweak the logo to work off it and to have a red version for the favicon. Liking these ideas for iconic swords. Keep the thoughts coming, will message her tomorrow with feedback « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 00:09, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
About the background - hm it could be nice, any specific ideas? :P About the logo - bolt's not a bad suggestion either but it would be a lot harder to do justice for plus it's not bright enough, which wouldn't be that visible IMO. --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 18:40, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Tooltips 2.0[edit]

The hype is real guys! I just implemented all the tooltip templates for skills and traits - they both do now support hovering tooltips for "large" as well as for "small" icons. We don't have to do any changes to our currently existing guides, I've altered all existing SkillBar, Gw2Skill, HUESkills, ... templates and it now just works automagically! I wrote many helper scripts to make this happen, but there was a lot of manual work required to be done because of Conflicting skills (and yes, this too works automatically for existing guides!). So you could imagine the amount of work behind this, it's total of 901 skill templates and 640 trait templates. Here is my workspace so you could explore the tooltips: Eremko/Directory/All Skills and Eremko/Directory/All Traits. In the future, please feel free to update the tooltips when balance patch hits GW2. --Eremko (talk) 18:19, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

You deserve the finest ale Hoelbrak can make. Epic gj! :D --Necromancer Icon Color.pngHanz(talk) 18:35, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Amazing work mate, it looks great! I will go ahead and write a quick Reddit post unless you want to do it ‎Eremko?-- Galaxian (talk) 19:33, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, you go ahead and tell redditors about it, I will give you karma! =) --Eremko (talk) 18:46, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Chase tried to explain the logic behind Reddit karma but I never understood it, lol. The post is up btw.-- Galaxian (talk) 20:03, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Cool. Also big thanks goes to Chase for all the hard JS/HTML/CSS work! I really like how he managed to make it look almost identical to the in-game tooltips. --Eremko (talk) 20:36, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
All of that is useless without your helper scripts :D That was seriously such a fast job. My timeline for completing this was March of next year (no joke!). Thank you so much for speeding that all up « Chase ♥ ♥ ♥ » 20:48, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
