Ele Help[edit]

Hey I have noticed all the edits you are doing in the ele builds and want to thank you. Thats one class I don't know much about so I appreciate the help with keeping them up to date and relevant. So thanks. :)

NP! I'll do a full pass over the ele pages and add the rest of the builds once the new trait UI is up and the rotation UI is a little bit more refined. -DEKeyz2Chaos (talk) 20:44, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Skill Rotations[edit]

Hey, would you like to outline some ideas for what you'd like to achieve? It's current implementation is too difficult to read/bulky. At first I figured we could just do what they have on IntoTheMists, but obviously it'll be better if you write out your perspective so we can get it really, really good :) Btw, as this is a wiki, I can't promise we'll get everything you want, but don't leave anything out, because when we get to working on it we'll try our very best to make it that way. I think I like the look of the skill bars already, and would just like some way to string tables together - kind of like what I'm doing right now with the SwapWeap and MainhandWeap objects for the rotation on Elementalist - S/D LH 0/4/5/5/0. Being able to put anywhere between 1 and 10 (okay, that may be too many) skills in a lineup would be great for formatting sake. For Ele I would love to be able to customize the color of the table so that fire could have a red background, water a blue, etc, but I know that's a feature that wouldn't be as useful for other classes. I think I have a very ugly proof-of-concept up on the Elementalist - S/D LH 0/4/5/5/0 page.
  • I would like headers above a group of cells that is arbitrary in length so that one could list what weapon set/attunement/transformation you're on.
  • I like the layout of a big icon with small text under it for the skills themselves.
  • I'm neutral on the arrows. I would like a space or some way to indicate progression through a rotation, but they look wimpy and unrefined.
  • I would like a way to include ad-hoc text (or a few simple phrases) inside a cell. Not all of the steps in a rotation are skills - some will be "Swap Weapons" or "Drop Conjure" or things along those lines.
  • Another phrase that would be nice is "repeat X times, which for an ele may be anywhere between 2 and 8. I would also see this being used for long periods of auto attacking.
  • Besides the fact that not everything is in tables, the things in tables aren't aligned the same way, which makes it look very sloppy ATM. Obviously that would be fixed with a unified system.
  • If we want to get crazy we could add a third row to the table (or something) that tells the reader how far along (in seconds) they are into the rotation and even how much damage that skill would do (or at least coefficient). I have timings and coefficients for ele skills and a smattering of other classes' skills, and I know you have that info for a number of thief skills.
    • This may be better implemented in tooltips. Is there a way to automate tooltips showing information stored in a database/separate wiki page to centralize what tooltips say and make updating a particular skill's tooltip faster?
    • This may be information overload to the casual viewer or just too much effort relative the utility the general body of users, so I understand if people say "no".
I'm not a graphics designer or UI analyst at all, so someone else may have a better idea. My big problems with IntoTheMists were that the gear is out of date and it was clunky to input a build and especially a rotation this long - and most of my rotations are at least this long.

And on the back end, I program my ele rotations into a spreadsheet using skill names as identifiers and would use a similar format if I expanded my research on other classes, so a format in which I can copypasta my rotation into a text editor, replace the line breaks and add a header and footer with wiki code to get it in the correct format, and do a little bit of tidying up for headers would be ideal. For classes without spreadsheeted rotations, it's not very hard for me to type out skill names (minus looking up random auto attack names in the wiki) For me, copypasta=best, typing=good, point and click = bad unless I can do it in two clicks (or less) and no drags.
Actually, on the subject of auto attack chains - would there be some way to code an auto attack representation that shows the three icons, slightly smaller, like they do on the gw2 wiki for sequences of skills - with a link to the gw2 wiki page of first attack in the chain? Would you please give me an example of a "spreadsheet rotation that was pasted here or the format it requires to be pasted to from here? Digesting all the information listed here and trying to think through the process :) Good work! Chase (talk) 13:37, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
The left few columns of my spreadsheet, which hold skill identification information, for a simple staff ele rotation are pictured here. When I write up the rotation in my text guides, I:
* Copy-paste the leftmost column into Notepad to give me an unformatted list of skill names:
Eruption
Fire Attune
Lava Font
Arcane Wave
Meteor Shower
Arcane Brilliance
Lava Font
Fireball
Fireball
Fireball
Fireball
Lava Font
Fireball
Fireball
Fireball
Fireball
Lava Font
Fireball
Fireball
Fireball
Fireball
Lava Font
Fireball
Fireball
Fireball
Fireball
* Manually replace repeated skills (such as auto attack chains) with (skillname) x# to note number of repetitions. This would turn out like:
Eruption
Fire Attune
Lava Font
Arcane Wave
Meteor Shower
Arcane Brilliance
Lava Font
Fireball x4
Lava Font
Fireball x4
Lava Font
Fireball x4
Lava Font
Fireball x4
* Replace line breaks with either an arrow or a - to space out skills and make it somewhat understandable as text, and add a note about repetition of the whole rotation
* The corresponding rotation to the list above is: "Eruption – Lava Font – Arcane Wave - Meteor Shower - Arcane Brilliance – Lava Font – Fireball x4 – Lava Font – Fireball x4 – Lava Font – Fireball x4 – Lava Font – Fireball x4 – repeat from 1st Lava Font"
Hopefully that better explains my current process when writing up rotations right now - and moreover, I hope that starts answering your question. I feel like I definitely lost you somewhere but I'm not quite sure where that was. When I played around with the rotation on the Elementalist - S/D LH 0/4/5/5/0 page, I didn't follow that process at all - I typed in all the skills since I was messing around with formatting and getting the hang of abusing the current objects to display skill in a somewhat readable way.

This is cool. I think I can work with this information next week. Gonna enjoy the weekend (and finish up the traits template), but maybe by next week's end we'll have a working prototype ;) Chase (talk) 21:18, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
