Equipment

Ascended gear and stat infusions are not required; you can use exotic gear with the same stats.

Standard Equipment

The Standard Variant uses similar gear to the Holosmith - Power DPS No Kit build for fractals and raids. This makes it a good general-purpose gear set and is the gear that most players should aim for.

Optimal Equipment

The Optimal Variant is the best possible gear for this build. It's overkill in most cases, and you should only get it if you have spare gold or you don’t care about fractals and raids.

Usage

Damage

  • Try to stay between 50% and 150% heat at all times.
  • Your highest damage skills are Photon Blitz Photon Blitz, Corona Burst Corona Burst, and your Photon Forge autoattack chain; use them whenever available.
  • While not in Photon Forge, just use your sword skills off cooldown.
  • Never interrupt your autoattack chain as most of the damage is in the 3rd hit. This applies both inside and outside Photon Forge.
  • Use
    and
    off cooldown.
  • If you can't get close to your target, you have a decent ranged autoattack in
. If you plan to stay ranged for the whole fight consider slotting
    and
    .

Defense

  • You have a lot of dodges with the vigor from Tools. If you need more you can trait
    .
  • is an incredibly powerful AoE crowd control skill. Use it to keep enemies knocked down while you unload your damage.
  • and
can be used to block attacks.
  • is a versatile defensive skill. You can use it to mitigate incoming damage or save it to use as a stun break.
  • Use
    to counter projectiles.
  • (from
) can be used to blind enemies.
  • If you still have trouble surviving, you can trait
    .
  • Remember to always dodge and sidestep attacks if possible. Don't get hit by anything you can move out of.

Sustain

  • The healing from
    and
can sustain you through minor damage.
  • You can pick
up for a cooldown reduction, or detonate it to blast the water field for more healing.
and Holographic Shockwave Holographic Shockwave are more blast finishers you can use.
    • Never leave your Healing Turret out: the healing you get from the passive regeneration is worse than if you pick it up and put it down again.
  • and
    cleanse conditions.
  • If you're having trouble with conditions, you can slot
    .
cleanses a condition and provides a light field, which you can blast for more condition cleanses.

One of the most powerful open world builds. In addition to insane AoE burst damage that makes farming a breeze, this build has excellent sustained damage and lot of tricks up its sleeve for dealing with more difficult fights.

This is a good build, though I had to do some tweaking to make it work for me, so I wouldn't die but still did decent damage in my opinion. I had some trouble staying alive with this build, so I took more defense. I changed the following:

Instead of Photon Wall and Rifle Turret for utility skills, I take Hard Light Arena and Grenade Kit. Hard Light Arena gives support to not just me but allies in Open World content such as Dragon's Stand meta and other HoT map metas. The Grenade Kit I find to be a much more solid and fun ranged arsenal of attacks than Mortar Kit. I understand all this removes the F skills for Photon Wall and Rifle Turret, but I found I needed the defense rather than bursty damage in Open World, especially when soloing Champion enemies and helping kill meta event bosses.

Instead of Mortar Kit, I take Prime Light Beam since I have a ranged option with Grenade Kit and therefore, I gain CC with Prime Light Beam to hurt breakbars on bosses and Champion enemies.

I also took the Light Density Amplifier trait in the Holosmith line, as I found myself dying to more direct damage than condition damage in Open World. And I took Adrenal Implant for more dodges....maybe I just suck :P but I needed it!

Great template for a build, I definitely encourage moving around skills and traits to see what works for you!!

This build is so great in any open world contents, high burst damage, versatile, well sustain, strong CC.

I use Rune of Strength instead of Scholar because i found myself alway under 90% HP, the bonus from Rune of Strength work great with this build too.

Overall, great build and probably one of the best open world build available in the game right now.

This build is incredible. It's capable of some incredible burst while also having a fair amount of defence via CC, Spectrum Shield and its toolbelt skill, and Healing Turret. It's also self-reliant when it comes to boons like Might and Fury, with some occasional quickness thrown in there to boot.

It should also be noted that Holographic Shockwave is a blast finisher, which can be used to your advantage with water fields (Healing Turret) and light fields (Hard Light Arena).

This is an excellent open world build, and probably the best one Engineer has available.

A solid build overall -- a mix of both PvP and Fractals builds, with more survivability than typically expected in Open World or Fractals.
