Variants

  • 24px Elusive Mind remains a viable option for Ineptitude builds, more so as a source of cleansing than a stun breaker.

Equipment Changes

Rune

  • - better overall condition duration.

Usage

Elite specialization basics

  • Dodge rolling is replaced by Mirage Cloak, which is more or less the same thing but allows you to cast skills and grants access to ambush attacks over its duration: 24px Imaginary Axes for Axe and 24px Chaos Vortex for Staff. Ambush skills replace the autoattack of the weapons for 1.5 seconds.
  • Pressing dodge grants Superspeed Superspeed and Regeneration Regeneration (which reduces incoming condition duration while it lasts thanks to 24px Renewing Oasis). 24px Infinite Horizon makes it so that whenever you gain Mirage Cloak, your clones are also going to receive it with all benefits including access to ambush attacks - it can even make your clones evade skills such as 24px Full Counter, denying your opponent various bonuses.
  • You can dodge while CC'd.

General

  • Make sure that you're below 75% endurance when using False Oasis.png False Oasis, as
Superior Rune of the Adventurer Superior Rune of the Adventurer
Superior Rune of the Adventurer.pngSuperior Rune of the Adventurer
    (1): +25 Condition Damage (2): +35 Power (3): +50 Condition Damage (4): +65 Power (5): +100 Condition Damage (6): When you use a heal skill you gain 50% endurance. (Cooldown: 10s)
refills a quarter of your endurance bar after healing.
  • The build has very poor access to condition cleansing, limited only to Jaunt.png Jaunt and The Prestige.png The Prestige. Try to play it safe against condition specs: outrange them with staff, chain Blind Blind / dodge in melee, etc.
  • Use Phase Retreat.png Phase Retreat for mobility while traveling between capture points. Phase Retreat teleports you in the opposite direction of where you're facing, so to teleport "forward" turn around to use it and then turn back. We recommend that you set up a bind for about face to do this in a fluid manner (Options ⇒ Control Options ⇒ Movement). Make sure that you don't have an enemy targeted whilst using any of these skills for movement purposes.
  • Illusionary Ambush.png Illusionary Ambush is useful for just about everything:
    • Defense: evasion + teleport to a random location + break targeting, quite convenient when you're being focused by the enemy team.
    • Offense: free ambush attack for you and all your clones
    • Mobility: it's a 1.2k range gapcloser afterall as you'll be teleported to a location near the target.
    • While this skill does not break stun, it can be used while CC'd.
  • Besides cleansing conditions while at the same time pressuring your opponent with them, Arcane Thievery.png Arcane Thievery is also useful for boon removal/stacking in general, for example getting rid of their Resistance Resistance or stealing Vigor Vigor for 24px Nomad's Endurance synergy.

Staff

  • Staff is what you use for sustain, ranged poking, and sustained damage.
  • Chaos Armor.png Chaos Armor is a great defensive tool against direct damage, mainly because of Weakness and Protection. Note: this skill can be used while stunned.
  • Chaos Storm.png Chaos Storm is the strongest skill on this weapon. Standing in it supplies allies with defensive boons including Aegis Aegis while inflicting several conditions that can mitigate damage like Weakness Weakness or Chill Chill (Chill makes it harder to reach you while slowing down their skill recharge rate), it even has a chance to CC them with Daze Daze. Excellent skill to use when you need area denial for downed cleave, sustain, and other such scenarios.
  • Phase Retreat.png Phase Retreat is good for building some distance between you and your target, and can even be used while stunned, potentially allowing you to save dodges for later.
    • If used in Chaos Storm.png Chaos Storm PR grants Chaos Armor.png Chaos Armor. Keep in mind that this doesn't stack in duration, so try not to overlap Chaos Armors.
  • Phantasmal Warlock.png Phantasmal Warlock summons 2 Phantasms, each periodically stacking Vulnerability Vulnerability on your target, which is useful for setting up burst. After the attack they'll turn into cones, potentially fueling shatters.

Doing damage

  • When it comes to damage, the strongest shatter skill in the build is Cry of Frustration.png Cry of Frustration, followed by Diversion.png Diversion (assuming the target doesn't have Stability Stability so that it can proc Ineptitude.png Ineptitude) then Mind Wrack.png Mind Wrack.
  • 24px Chaos Vortex is excellent for covering important condition stacks because it applies several conditions in one hit, and it's AoE.
  • Interrupting an enemy or using any Shatter skills in melee range inflicts Blind Blindness, and Blinding a foe causes Confusion Confusion through Ineptitude.png Ineptitude.
  • When not doing your main combo, most of your damage will come from smaller bursts of interrupts, shatters, Jaunts, and ambush skills.

There are several strong burst combos, we're only going to list a few of them:

  1. Activate The Prestige.png The Prestige, it'll go off after 3 seconds and inflict Burning in AoE.
    1. Optional: do it in melee range for the Blinding attack.
  2. Cast Phantasmal Mage.png Phantasmal Mage for Burning and an interrupt.
    1. Optional: do it in melee range for double the Burning stacks.
  3. 24px Lingering Thoughts whilst dodging, followed by 24px Imaginary Axes.
  4. 24px Axes of Symmetry + Jaunt.png Jaunt + Shatter roughly at the same time, Jaunt can also extend the reach of Axes of Symmetry.

If you care about the Stealth Stealth and want to burst from there:

  1. The Prestige The Prestige
  2. Phantasmal Mage Phantasmal Mage without melee contact
  3. 24px Axes of Symmetry
  4. Shatter + 24px Lingering Thoughts

New meta after Elusive Mind Nerf, had to make a couple of adjustment though such as changing Sword to Axe for better pressure. Brings the usual A+ mirage burst and mobility to the table.

Cant be stunlocked so it coutners most of the meta holo and sb builds. Deals massive burst damage that no one can survive against.

Overpoweringly strong. Its the build you play when you want to get a pvp title without knowing how to counterplay bursts. So much mitigation.

An optimized mesmer running this build is basically both lethal and untouchable. Fulfills the role that DP thieves used to have very well

Ridiculously strong. Great mobility pared with high damage. Very hard to pin down in a fight. A boon to have on your team and a nightmare to fight against.

Utrex gave this build 5 stars November 2017

It has excellent damage, trades a bit of sustain over extra mobility. Carrion lets it facetank a little more but upkeeping defenses will be more difficult compared to Chrono.

CGSN gave this build 5 stars October 2017

The effectiveness of this weaponset and blink/jaunt provide a very powerful base to build from. The in-combat mobility is the best in the game-- not even Daredevil comes close to how fast this class moves in fights with the addition of Jaunt and untargeted sword ambushes. It has an absurd amount of invulnerability and stealth as well. Having this on top of Mesmer's already utility-packed kit provides for a powerful dueling class.

There's also a surprisingly large amount of flexibility in the utility/trait/sigil options for this build, allowing players to tailor their builds to specific strengths and match-ups.

Would not be surprised to see a sharp increase in the number of Mirages if SB and Scourge are nerfed hard.
