Great Frost Staff Solo PvP Build
Strengths
- High Damage
- Good Mobility
- Good CC
Weaknesses
- Squishy
- High Skill Floor
Overview
The Elder's Great Frost Staff build is focused on chipping away at enemies while maintaining full control of the engagement through the use of Frozen Surge as it can keep an enemy slowed down the whole fight. This build has a steep learning curve as a good amount of practice is required to maintain a fine balance between kiting and dealing damage. The build performs great in Solo Mists, Corrupted Dungeons and even as solo in Open World.
Equipment
Usage
Elder's Great Frost Staff
Frozen Surge — This is your main DPS skill but also the way you keep range on enemies. Always aim to cast this on cooldown as you kite away and control range between yourself and enemies. It can also help you hit your Hail as the slow makes it easier for you to anticipate when to use Hail.
Frost Nova — Use this to lock down an enemy but also as a mobility tool. Wait for enemies to get close to you before using this to stun them and deal damage before you continue with Hail.
Hail — Keep in mind that while the damage on this skill is high, there is a small delay before the damage is applied so try to anticipate where your enemies will be before using the skill. Always try to recast this when you have the chance to maximize damage while using it after Frozen Surge or Frost Nova makes it easier for you to hit enemies.
Energetic — As this is the only mana regeneration you have, make sure to weave in auto-attacks between skills.
Elder's Assassin Jacket
Ambush — You want to use this to reset cooldowns and kite as you need. This can also be used to deny enemy damage after they stack up buffs like Heroic Charges on Sword Users. Ambush also increases the damage you do when you come out of stealth based on how long you've stayed (up to 40%).
Balanced Mind — This passive is increasing your damage, its the only valid choice.
Elder's Hunter Hood
Retaliate — A valuable defensive option, Retaliate boosts your damage resistance for a short time and reflects 85% of incoming damage back to the attacker. Use it to counter high-damage spells like Spinning Blades, Death Curse, or Pyroblast. With experience, you'll learn which other spells are good to reflect, but there are many possibilities.
Balanced Mind — Another damage increasing passive, great to have!
Elder's Soldier Boots
Rejuvenating Sprint — This is one of the best sprints, and Elder's Soldier Boots are a popular choice for solo PvP. The boots regenerate some of your HP each time you use them and have a fairly low cooldown. Plus, they're usually rather cheap. You can also switch to Wanderlust if you are facing extremely mobile enemies.
Toughness — This passive increases your defenses by a bit. The other option is Authority but the 5% isn't big enough to make a difference.
Elder's Undead Cape
Vanisher — When your HP goes below 15%, you enter stealth, allowing you to use abilities but your damage is also reduced by 50%. Use this as a last resort to reposition or disengage from enemies, especially when combined with Ambush. Check for a cloak icon under your character name to see if this stealth ability is available.
Rotations
- While there isn't an actual rotation, you ideally want to use Frozen Surge to do damage while continuing to kite. If the enemy pushes close to you, use Frost Nova to deal damage and also stun the enemy so you can cast Hail twice before resuming your constant use of Frozen Surge as you kite.
Consumables
Major Healing Potion — This comes in use whenever you need to heal up and stay healthy while you kite. With your goal being to always stay as close to max HP as possible. An alternative is the Major Gigantify Potion if you are facing an enemy that has high burst potential.
Pork Omelette — Because of your heavy reliance on your abilities, you want to have great cooldown reduction and this is what the Pork Omelette offers. You should try to use atleast a 7.1 though. You can also use a Deadwater Eel Stew for a mix of damage boost and cooldown rate but keep in mind that it is quite expensive. A 6.1 offers similar benefits for cheaper.
