Enchanting Guide
Enchanting in Ashes of Creation is a system that allows players to enhance their gear, offering both vertical and horizontal progression.
Vertical Enchantments - Increase the power level of an item, such as boosting damage or defense stats. Most players will focus on enchanting weapons first to increase damage done as this helps a great deal while armor pieces are a secondary choice.
Horizontal Enchantments - Add situational or utility-based effects, like elemental resistances or PvP-specific bonuses.
Enchanting is done through scrolls which are the only ingredient needed for a piece of gear to improve. There is no profession skill that increases enchanting success rate, instead, enchanting remains closely tied to luck.
Enchanting Mechanics

Success Rates and Risks
Safe Enchanting - Initial enchantment levels are designed to be safe, with guaranteed success and no risk of item destruction.
Over-Enchanting - Attempting to enchant gear beyond certain thresholds introduces risks, including the potential destruction of the item. Players can use optional items (charms) during the enchanting process to reduce these risks. As of writing of this guide, the enchanting system doesn't appear to be entirely developed and many changes are expected to happen during Phase 3 if more adjustments are planned for the game balance.
Tempering System
Tempering is a separate but related system used to fine-tune item performance. It provides stat variability and customization after an item has been crafted or enchanted, this directly changes the standard stats of an item and is mostly used for weapons to improve damage potential.
Core Concept
Stat Range - Crafted gear in Ashes of Creation has a range of potential values for each stat (e.g., 90–110 Strength). Tempering allows players to adjust stats within this range using tempering materials that can be found when deconstructing items you don't need.
How It Works
Identify Temperable Items - Only certain crafted or enchanted gear pieces can be tempered.
Apply Tempering Materials - Use resources gained from deconstructing items to create Tempering Kits. Different gear pieces require different kit types though. For example, a weapon would require a File:-1Novice Tempering Kit - Weapon.
Progression-Based - Access to tempering and its effectiveness may scale with the player’s crafting or refining skills.
