Cavalier - Spear + Crossbow Small Scale PvP Build
- High Burst Damage
- High Mobility
- Easy to Play
- Gear Dependant
- Squishy
- Off-meta
Overview
With the Cavalier, you focus on dealing damage quickly in bursts while using mobility skills to move between targets and keep them at range, away from you but close enough to be damaged. While it is an off-meta build, it can still perform well in the hands of a good player looking for a different approach or a fresh class to master alongside another weapon they've already mastered.
Attributes
Focus primarily on Dexterity and Perception to boost your accuracy, critical hit rate, and overall damage. Since Crossbows and Spears are damage-focused, you can ignore Wisdom. Adding a few points to Strength is still useful for increased damage and extra health. Aim for at least 30 points in total early on to improve survivability as it offers a good amount of HP to not be one-shot by skills like Judgment Lightning heavy attacking you.
Skills
Start upgrading your Crossbow skills with the most important ones first: Quick Fire, Nimble Leap, and Mother Nature's Protest. These are crucial in all PVP situations, whether it’s Dominion events, Arenas, or nighttime battles. Don’t overlook Unyielding Sentinel, as it provides a powerful shield and increases your heavy attack chances, benefiting both you and your team. Mortal Mark is also great for boosting damage when applied at the start of your rotation to improve your DPS.
Next, focus on upgrading your Spear skills. Start with Vicious Fury and Javelin Surge, which work together as a combo to deal mid-range damage and secure kills. Culling Arc is another excellent option with a short cooldown and multiple attacks that can stack Ignite debuffs on enemies.
Cyclonic Fury is a strong skill for dealing quick AoE damage and debuffing enemies, while Rising Slash is perfect for crowd control, letting you peel for yourself and set up combos like Cyclonic Fury. Don’t forget support skills like Unyielding Sentinel, as it’s vital for extra shielding and heavy attack boosts.
Finally, when upgrading passives with skillbooks, prioritize Ambidexterity and Eagle Vision to enhance overall damage. Also, Piercing Strike and Mortal Wrath are great for boosting raw damage, especially when finishing off targets.
Equipment
These are the first items you should strive for through the leveling period as they are very easy to get and upgrade or trait as needed. However, you shouldn't try to trait these items too much as you won't be spending too much time playing with this setup before you start changing pieces into the Midgame. The green accessories however are very easy to trait as you can craft many of them quickly in order to get the correct traits so you should consider traiting them until you change into purples. The same goes for the blue ring as you keep it for a long time.
This is the gear you should transition to once you're leveled to 50 and start grinding gear. It is comprised of gear you can get either from dungeons or by completing Litographs, they are relatively easy to trait up and you will spend most of the time wearing this set before advancing into the late game so traiting these items is very important and should be your main focus.
This is the current endgame gear you should aim for, and while it isn't easy to acquire, it offers great power without the need of acquiring archboss gear pieces. However, items like Tevent's Fangs of Fury or other archboss weapons are superior but difficult to acquire for the majority of players. If you do manage to get the archboss weapons for your build, feel free to use them over the weapons shown here.

Crossbow: Start by putting 9 points into Chain Fire to increase your ranged damage and reduce cooldown time, allowing you to do your rotations more often. Then, add 9 points to Move for extra damage and a small speed boost. Use the last point on Regen as there isn't any other choice.
Spear: First, put 9 points in Face Off, then 9 points in Destroy to boost your damage and cooldown speed, making the build stronger. Use the final point on Charge to improve defense by a tiny bit.
Rotations
- This is your main melee rotation to deal high single target damage while also helping you get away from enemies that are trying to run you down. This can easily be used aggressively though. Dash into them with Gale Rush before using Abyssal Cleave to stun them and transition into Cyclonic Fury so you apply Ignite stacks but also set up for extra damage with Rising Slash.
- Use Vicious Fury to deal some extra damage and build up Ember stacks so you can finish off the target with Javelin Surge.
- Use this rotation to burst down targets. Start with Gale Rush to close the distance if needed before applying the Mortal Mark debuff to the target and stunning them with Abyssal Cleave so you can follow-up easily.
- Cast Quick Fire before resetting its cooldown (if it didn't reset itself thanks to the crits) with Nimble Leap. Repeat this again with Quick Fire once more before resetting it using Nimble Leap and using Quick Fire once again. From this point on, you can transition into the Spear Rotation.
Mother Nature's Protest: Make sure you always have this active when going into PVP as it adds extra damage.
Unyielding Sentinel: Same as Mother Nature's Protest, you can use this to boost heavy attack chance. However, you can also use it to gain a temporary shield that helps with your survival if used at the correct times like when you are being pressured.
