Weapon

  • Sword over Axe - better CC, mobility, and spammable leap finisher for combos. Weaker burst damage however, and low pressure outside of ambush attacks.

Usage

Elite specialization basics

  • Dodge rolling is replaced by Mirage Cloak, which is more or less the same thing but allows you to cast skills and grants access to ambush attacks for the duration: Chaos Vortex for staff and Imaginary Axes for axe. Ambush skills replace the autoattack of the weapons for 1.5 seconds.
  • You can dodge while casting skills or stomping/rezing, but you can't dodge while CC'd.

Sustain

  • Staff is your primary defensive weapon.
  • Chaos Armor may not look that amazing at first glance, but it's an instant cast skill which applies AoE Blind Blind to nearby foes and could also apply Protection Protection and Weakness Weakness, effectively filtering incoming damage through two layers of mitigation. It's an excellent skill for surviving direct damage burst and it's usable even while CC'd.
  • Chaos Storm is the strongest skill on this weapon. Standing in it supplies allies with defensive boons including Aegis Aegis while inflicting several conditions that can mitigate damage like Weakness Weakness or Chill Chill (Chill makes it harder to reach you while slowing down their skill recharge rate). The first hit of Chaos Storm always Daze Dazes enemies, making it a reliable AoE interrupt.
  • Phase Retreat is good for building some distance between you and your target, and can even be used while stunned, potentially allowing you to save dodges for later.
    • If used in Chaos Storm PR grants Chaos Aura Chaos Aura. Keep in mind that this doesn't stack in duration, so try not to overlap Chaos Auras.
  • The build has decent access to condition cleansing, but no mass cleanse: dodging and Jaunt each remove 1 condition, Sigil of Superior Sigil of Cleansing and The Prestige remove several. Try to play it safe against condition specs: outrange them with staff, chain block / evade frames in melee, etc. Your strongest option against damage in general is Distortion, granting you immunity to any form of pressure including CC and conditions that are already on you.

Mobility

  • Use Phase Retreat for mobility while roaming or chasing after targets. Phase Retreat teleports you in the opposite direction of where you're facing, so to teleport "forward" turn around to use it and then turn back. We recommend that you set up a bind for about face to do this in a fluid manner (Options ⇒ Control Options ⇒ Movement).
    • Make sure that you don't have an enemy targeted when doing this!

Damage

  • You're more than capable of ending a duel in the first few seconds, if you land your burst.
  • Shaper of Chaos is a key part of your bursts. When you have Chaos Aura Chaos Aura, gaining a 2nd Chaos Aura detonates it for AoE condition and boon application. This process consumes both Chaos Auras, so you must apply one again and detonate it with yet another Chaos Aura.
  • This process requires us to stacks 5-7 Chaos Aura Chaos Auras in just a few seconds in oder to do burst damage.

Axe/Torch burst rotation

  1. The Prestige for stealth and to trigger a blast finisher in 3 seconds
  2. Phantasmal Mage
  3. Axes of Symmetry for a leap finisher
  4. Drop Feedback on your target BEFORE Axes of Symmetry connects. If you're having trouble with the timing, just use Feedback before pressing AoS, but that makes the burst more predictable and gives your opponent more time to move out of the field.
  5. Jaunt inside Feedback (leap finisher)
  6. Cry of Frustration (applies Chaos Aura via traits)
  7. Weapon swap in melee range to proc Sigil of Superior Sigil of Geomancy and Sigil of Superior Sigil of Doom
  8. Chaos Armor for yet another Chaos Aura
  9. Phase Retreat (leap finisher)

Sword/Torch burst rotation

  1. The Prestige for stealth and to trigger a blast finisher in 3 seconds
  2. Phantasmal Mage
  3. Illusionary Leap
  4. Drop Feedback on your target.
  5. Dodge
  6. Swap for a leap finisher
  7. Use Mirage Thrust for another leap while Mirage Cloak from the dodge still lasts
  8. Jaunt inside Feedback (leap finisher)
  9. Cry of Frustration (applies Chaos Aura via traits)
  10. Weapon swap in melee range to proc Sigil of Superior Sigil of Geomancy and Sigil of Superior Sigil of Doom
  11. Chaos Armor for yet another Chaos Aura
  12. Phase Retreat (leap finisher)

I think it's a 5. Started out as a fun experiment with the new trait, expecting a complete one trick, but it can definitely do well even past the initial burst. High HP, high armor, lots of defensive boons, mobility, CC, even okay levels of condi cleansing.
