Skill Variants

Healing Skills

A.E.D. requires a bit of skill to use as it provides a massive heal if you were to take lethal damage, but mediocre otherwise. Its toolbelt skill is also a useful CC Static Shock. Other options can be considered.

  • Healing Turret - good healing and condi cleanse when first cast. But the toolbelt skill is very mediocre.
  • Med Kit - large heal with Bandage Self. The kit also has condition cleanse, extra heal plus a water field, and defensive boons.

Utility Skills

Throw Mine deals massive damage and you should never replace it, it is even stronger thanks to Gadgeteer.
Grenade Kit requires a bit of skill to use to be constantly switching in and out of it, but provides good damage.
Elixir U is just a good stun break. You can replace Grenade Kit and Elixir U for other alternatives if you'd like.

  • Rocket Boots - for getting around faster. But provides no damage.
  • Flamethrower - for tagging mobs in group events with Flame Jet.
  • Elixir Gun - good stun break with its toolbelt skill Healing Mist, healing with Super Elixir, and a backwards leap with Acid Bomb.
  • If you need extra crowd control (though Throw Mine already deals a lot) you can use Personal Battering Ram.

Elite Skills

Elite Mortar Kit provides a good mixture of utility and damage from 1500 range. Flash Shell can blind groups of trash mobs, and Endothermic Shell can slow them. Elixir Shell also provides some healing. Other options can be considered.

  • Supply Crate - AoE stun and damage. Amazing except for its long cooldown. Med Pack Drop cleanses all conditons when first used and then leaves health packs in the area.

Specializations

Variants

  • Streamlined Kits - swiftness at the cost of damage

Alchemy

Alchemy can replace Tools to massively reduce damage in exchange for lots of boons and defense.

  • You will need to use more elixir to benefit from HGH. Use Elixir H, Elixir B, Elixir U, Elixir Gun for its Acid Bomb and Super Elixir; and Elite Mortar Kit for Elixir Shell.

Equipment

Ascended gear is not required, exotic gear with the same stats will work.

Usage

Damage

  • Spam Throw Mine, Blunderbuss, Jump Shot, Grenade Barrage, and Orbital Strike.
    • When those are on cooldown, use your Grenade Kit for Shrapnel Grenade and Poison Grenade, then go back to rifle.
  • If you need really long damage you can use Elite Mortar Kit.

Defense

  • Most enemies will just die before they can attack you. They will also struggle to even come close to you thanks to all your crowd control.
  • Flash Shell can be used to continuously blind enemies, and Endothermic Shell to impede their movement. You can also use Overcharged Shot to push them away if it doesn't push them away from nearby melee range players.
  • Jump Shot can be used to get out of trouble.
  • Toss Elixir U - AoE stunbreak for your allies, and superspeed superspeed.
  • Remember to always dodge and sidestep attacks if possible. Don't get hit by anything you can move out of. You have lots of Vigor Vigor so don't be shy to dodge.
  • Your toolbelt skills remove conditions thanks to Mechanized Deployment.

Sustain

  • A.E.D. will heal you for a lot if you were to take lethal damage in the next 8 seconds (duration increased thanks to Gadgeteer). But if you prefer a less risky heal skill you can use Healing Turret which also cleanses 2 conditions. You can pick the turret up for a cooldown reduction, or detonate it 1 second after deploy to blast the water field for more healing.
    • Never leave your Healing Turret out: the healing you get from the passive regeneration is worse than if you detonate it / pick it up and put it down again.
  • Elixir Shell provides a small amount of healing and creates a water combo field that you can blast for extra healing.
  • Flash Shell provides a light field that you can blast to cleanse conditions.
  • Big Boomer provides a little bit of healing.

Crowd Control

  • Overcharged Shot
  • Throw Mine
  • Static Shock
  • Net Shot

Very easy to learn, and good damage for open world. I highly recommend this as a starter late game build.

This remains more or less the most effective core build for engineer in open world.

Really good build, although I would change the Bomb Kit for Flamethrower, it does good AoE damage and is easy to use

This build is probably the easiest build to play for core engineer at the moment. Uses the easy-to-learn bomb kit (a good kit to start off with learning how kits function) and the mortar kit which would be rough for newer players who aren't used to ground targeting, but regardless, it has good damage and sustain. A great build for new players who just started out the game or just new engineer players.
