Skill Variants

Utility

  • Blade Renewal over Signet of Midnight - Blade Renewal is a strong defensive skill that can cancel out a lot of damage, but doesn't break stun so it has to be used proactively.

Elite

  • Mass Invisibility - strong defensive option with group utility that could also allow you and your team to ambush enemies from Stealth Stealth.

Weapons

  • Spear is set in stone but the second set is highly customizable. Both Greatsword for more burst damage with some range and Dagger/x for a ranged set are popular options. Offhand Shield for more survivability or Pistol for higher pressure are also viable choices.

Insane damage potential and survivability for a power mesmer. Unblockable projectiles plus aegis on shatter and quickness from blocks can all be used to gigabuff burst by giving quickness to spear 2 and 4. Probably the scariest spear mesmer gets right now, and what's scarier is taking shield, marauder amulet and relic of the defender let's the build not only roam, but duel quite effectively. Obviously it's not optimal but I've seen some people do really well, especially when learning spear, on that setup, plus even without berserker, you can still one-shot people, and Rivers' alactrity is kinda meh after nerfs. I will say though, since signet of illusions got nerfed pretty hard, signet of midnight might be a better pick, since the signet was predominantly used to reset distortion, which it doesn't always do in time anymore, making the stealth and stunbreak look more attractive.
