Overview

An Untamed power build for WvW roaming utilizing Ranger's spear to deal massive damage in close to medium range. This is a high risk, high reward build that could delete opponents in seconds but might lose just as easily if you're not careful.

Skill Variants

Weapons

Spear is mandatory but the secondary weapon slot is more flexible. Viable options are:

  • Mainhand Dagger - the biggest selling point here is the teleport, especially the vertical mobility it offers. With dagger you get to chase after enemies even if they escape to the highground. The damage is also fine and has a combo finisher for stealth stacking.
  • Mainhand Sword - 2 mobility tools with combo potential and great damage.
  • Offhand Mace - sort of a defensive weapon with condi cleansing and a bit of Stability Stability that's just enough to counter certain CCs when timed right. Also has great damage.
  • Offhand Warhorn - combo potential, CC and some ranged pressure. The boons are not that relevant except for the opener, as you can get these passively from other sources during combat.

Pets

Aether Hunter Aether Hunter is optional. Other viable pets include:

  • Jaguar Jaguar - Jaguar's kit is weaker, but it does have instant Stealth Stealth access for improved Spear attacks.

Usage

Elite specialization basics

  • Untamed Untamed Rangers have more control over their pets than regular Rangers, allowing them to manually control their pet's 3 special attacks.
  • Unleash is the central mechanic of Untamed. At any given time either you or your pet is in the Unleashed state, and you get to flip back and forth on a 1s CD.
  • When you're Unleashed, your first autoattack is empowered. Spear's turns into Ravager's Abandon while Dagger's becomes Neurotoxin Burst. Unleashing yourself also makes you deal more damage.
  • Unleashing the pet grants your pet a damage reduction while their pet skills flip over to new ones:
    • F1 becomes Venomous Outburst
    • F2 becomes Rending Vines
    • F3 becomes Enveloping Haze

General

  • Pet swapping acts as a Blast finisher thanks to Clarion Bond. Being instant, you can have Smokescale place a Smoke Cloud under you (even while you're stunned), and swap pets for AoE stealth.
  • Smokescale Smokescale's F2 Smoke Cloud is a useful combo field:
    • Projectile finishers like Falcon's Stoop could Blind Blind your target, increasing your sustain.
    • While your pet is unleashed, Smoke Cloud is replaced by Rending Vines which is a Blast finisher. Dropping the field, unleashing the pet and pressing the skill again could make your pet combo Stealth for you on his own.
    • Both weapon sets have either leap or blast finishers for stealth stacking.

Sustain

  • Forest's Fortification is one of your best survival tools. You can also reduce its CD by attacking enemies.
  • Cleansing Unleash makes your unleash ability remove 2 conditions every 10 seconds, which is your first line of defense against conditions.
  • Mutate Conditions is for emergencies in case condition damage is starting to overwhelm you. Consider disengaging/repositioning right after or following up with Stealth Stealth so you have some time to recover. It's also a stunbreak.
  • "Protect Me!" is both a stunbreak and an excellent skill for damage mitigation. Hold onto it in case you get stunned if Mutate Conditions is on CD, otherwise you get to use it a bit more freely.
  • Every unleashed pet skill can be used defensively, and Unleash Pet itself grants you damage reduction.
  • Venomous Outburst is an instant source of ranged Blind Blind via trait synergy that could also be used if you're CC'd or casting skills.
  • Rending Vines applies Slow Slow but only if the target is CC'd. It's still useful for preventing them from counterpressuring you after the CC.
  • Enveloping Haze destroys projectiles while the Chill Chill makes it easy for you to kite enemies caught in it.
  • It's fine to use Panther's Prowl just to stealth up and disengage for a bit. Both sets have mobility skills to help you build gaps too.

Doing damage

  • Make sure that you're the one who's unleashed during burst combos, not the pet! Don't miss out on Vow of the Untamed.
  • Once evey 15 seconds unleashed autoattacks become available: Ravager's Abandon on Spear and Neurotoxin Burst on Dagger. You don't suddenly gain access to them whenever they're off cooldown, only when you use Unleash Ranger.
    • Let Loose makes it easier to manage these skills - whenever you swap weapons, the CD is reset so you always get to use unleashed attacks right after weapon swapping. After that the 15s CD still applies but only if you stay on the same weapon long enough.
  • Whenever Fury Fury is applied to you, your next attack will deal more damage and be a guaranteed critical hit. This only works on the next strike and doesn't cover entire skills that deliver multiple hits like Wolf's Onslaught.
  • Sources of Fury Fury applications in the build:
    • Swapping pets thanks to Clarion Bond. This is instant and could even be used in the middle of casting skills to make them crit when they land.
    • Weapon swapping.
    • Randomly when getting stuck below 75% HP.

Spear

  • Spear's gimmick is stealth attacks - whenever you're stealthed, stronger versions of skills 2-5 become available. As striking an enemy reveals you, you only get to use 1 of these skills per stealth window.
    • Stealth attacks share a CD with their regular versions! If you combo stealth with Warclaw's Engage (which is a leap finisher), Predator's Ambush will be on CD so you won't get to use it as a followup.
  • Skills 2-4 deal heavy damage while #5 (Panther's Prowl) fills a utility purpose.
  • Panther's Prowl is perhaps the most important skill on this weapon, as it's an easy way of obtaining Stealth Stealth. Not only that, but it allows you to use stealth attacks even when you're Revealed Revealed! So this could even fit into burst combos - in case you've just revealed yourself by doing a stealth attack, Panther's Prowl could unlock other stealth attacks without having to wait for Revealed to fall off.
  • Skill #2 on Spear, Mongoose's Frenzy is a simple melee cleave with high damage. Works fine as a followup to skill #4.
    • Stealth attacks: Wolf's Onslaught adds an extra strike at the end, increasing its damage significantly but also its cast time. Works best when the target's CC'd and can't fight back or if you
  • Skill #3, Falcon's Stoop is a solid ranged attack. You can extend its range and make it unblockable by stealthing up.
  • Skill #4, Warclaw's Engage is a highly versatile skill and the primary candidate for stealth attacks. Works as a leap finisher, mobility tool, has good damage and could Daze Daze targets if stealthed. If you can get stealth from other sources, use this in stealth. If you can't, use this to gain stealth by comboing with your Smokescale.

This is about what i run. Switching the first wilderness survival perk is big due to aoe barrage hitting some targets that inflict negative or even damage back to you and that regen running makes it to where i do not have to worry about dropping out due to running out of heals, in which course setting the third untamed option to a self heal is huge during battle as if you drop signet of the hunt in there prior to that and your unleased ambush from longbow, and switch the second untamed option to where it removes boons, your hitting 15 in the pile removing 30 boons while overexceeding your healthbar for an essestial full health self heal, which of course you have to overset the skirmishing perkset over to precision, with two stun breaks that also remove condi and grant fury, with an entangled on there for helping teammates running or securing the kill, sad to see this build not on there. signet of lesser stone and run through that pile with either the untamed heal or your ultimate, up.
