Designed for: PvP Conquest

Overview

A Dragonhunter build for PvP focusing on burst, CC, and minor team support utilizing Traps, Wings of Resolve, and Symbols.

Archival note: got replaced by the Trapper rune version.

Skill Variants

Utility

  • Smite Condition over Contemplation of Purity - if you think you're not going to need the mass cleanse or the decently low cooldown stunbreak from CoP (which should rarely be the case). It is quite strong against Mirage though as the cleansing is needed more frequently and clones die to its AoE damage.

Specializations

Variants

  • You can replace Hunter's Determination with both of the other traits depending on what you (dont) need in certain matchups. When you do that you should use Retaliatory Subconscious on Virtues.

Usage

General

  • The ring created by a triggered Test of Faith deals more damage than the initial trigger, and a significant portion of your burst damage comes from pulling/pushing foes through it.
  1. Drop the trap preferably at your target's feet so that they spring it immediately and not after you already blew a CC. Consider jumping in with Judge's Intervention if they were far away.
  2. Push them outside the ring with either Deflecting Shot or Shield of Absorption.
  3. Pull them back in with Hunter's Verdict (secondary skill of Spear of Justice).
  4. If possible, swap weapons and use the other knockback skill too that you didn't 2 steps before.
  • Test of Faith can also be used defensively as it's an instant cast skill that's also usable while stunned and grants Protection Protection. If you're not going to combo it for some reason and don't need it defensively either, try to drop it at the edge of the capture point - this should limit your opponents' movement and make it harder not to cross it, potentially baiting out dodges.
  • Deflecting Shot is unblockable and can be used to interrupt blocking skills thanks to Heavy Light.
  • Wings of Resolve removes a total of 5 conditions and gives a substantial heal to you and your teammates, use it often. It's also an excellent mobility tool in combat.
  • Shield of Courage breaks stun and blocks all attacks in front of you, use it to relive pressure from you and your team - for example, you can stand facing foes attempting to cleave downed teammates while you or your team is reviving them. If you are not getting focused hard you should try to keep it for situations where your team need to rez or stomp.
  • The reason Sigil of Annulment is so good on Longbow is that the boon removal happens before the damage is calculated, which means True Shot on an enemy with Protection can rip Protection and do full damage. The same is true for hitting an enemy with Deflecting Shot, the boon strip can allow you to CC targets who have Stability Stability.
  • Try to burn through all of your virtues before resorting to Renewed Focus. RF is a great skill to use if you're being focues by the enemy team and you don't have any CDs left. Just keep in mind that this skill makes you lose capture point contribution for its duration.

Sword/Shield

  • This is the defensive set of the build, but still has some hard hitting skills.
  • The main source of burst damage here comes from Zealot's Defense. Note that the projectiles can be very unreliable in anything but melee range. Always try to use it after swapping weapons to get the most out of Sigil of Agility (except if you need to cleave a downed body, then use the quickness to auto attack).
  • Symbol of Blades has many uses: vertical mobility via teleportation, symbol for cleaving, or a combo field which can be used for AoE cleansing by executing a blast finisher in it.
  • Use Shield of Judgment when you or an ally is about to be focused by the enemy, or if you're already pressured. It also applies boons in a cone, try to aim it at as many allies as possible.
  • As mentioned above, Shield of Absorption is mainly a combo tool, but you can also use it for general CC (even neutralizing enemy points) or to defend against some ranged attacks. It forms a dome around you for a couple of seconds, blocking projectiles. You can choose to detonate the dome with its chain skill, which will cause a bit of AoE healing.

Counters

  • High sustain builds such as Mender Druids will outlast it in 1v1s.

I'm almost in Platinum I, but I can't continue. I'll have to continue with Radiant Greatsword (Core). There's no chance of continuing with DH even if it's a lot of fun.

Does well as a solid Gold II > build for solo queueing. But start moving into Gold III / Plat I + and you'll find it can't keep up. Good for some fun what I call "doink" moments, however.

It's a good build but not good enough. I change just about everything on this build. I use greatsword over longbow and I use focus over shield and I swapped rune to strength and I swapped amulet to paladin. Everything I've changed help me alot

Still one of the strongest duellists in game and is usefull in teamfights due to cc and single target spike

Kills mesmer. Hard. Straighup chokes the life out of them if played well, which I like in this mirage infested hellhole we call ranked. Has it's reason to exist. Unfortunately at the moment this elite specialisation is literally a downgrade from the F2P version of guard. Arenanet probably doesn't remember they created this spec, but they sure as hell don't care. I used to play DH a lot back in HoT and a good player can do wonders on it, BUT most who play this just can't let go. It's the nightmare of squishies, but the meta is tank after tank after tank which makes this build struggle beyond belief at plat 1 and above. Wanna climb out of elohell? Look no further, DH gets the job done, few do it better. Wanna go BACK to elohell after plat 1? Look no further, DH gets the job done.

DH was never popular in organized 5v5 to begin with, but extremely common in soloQ up until the return of core guard which kinda took its spot amongst the ranked players. PoF powercreep didn't go easy on it either. Still sees some use in ranked and of course it's not 100% useless, but clearly can't keep up with the meta at higher ratings. There are builds that do more damage and at the same time offer way more for the team. Still the best DH build for PvP, but unless you really want to play this elite spec I'd suggest finding something else.

amazing build high dmg, good survivability ,still work gr8 in unrank and rank pvp, im going with Rune of the Dragonhunter and remove judges intervention and take procession blades, i think that rune of the lynx is not a good option, condi dmg is not importent in this build and to take this rune only for 25% run speed is waste of rune, Rune of the Dragonhunter give you alot more burst.

Don't hesitate to switch to sword/focus either. When the reflects get nasty, you can pop in and do a lot of blinding and other damage.

Everyone who says that this build is not too good are the players that used to play it before nerf when it was realy overpower. I just started to play this build yesterday first time in my pvp journey and I have to say the build is awesome. I can easly get 20+ kills per match and Im always a huge support for my team. I have no idea how it was before 20% True Shot nerf but I can only imagine that it was realy too overpower. Usually I take out people with 1 simple combo, Judge's Intervention > Spear of Justice > Deflecting Shot > True Shot. Plus I dont know why people complain about this 20% damage nerf on True Shot, when its cooldown is just 4 sec... Like I said, people just dont like getting nerfed thats why they complain, but the build is really, really strong. I used to play Berserker Macebow warrior build, I switched to this one yesterday and Im sure Im gonna stick with the Guardian now.

I started playing my first PvP-Matches today with this build, and I got to say; It Rocks! I assume I got a little 'Matchmaking-Bonus' and got teamed up against other PvP-beginner... ...They didn't stand a chance 1v2. So, Thanks for sharing this.

The build will never beat power Ranger's 1v1 as they are one of the best 1v1 classes in game. That said the power dh build can go head to head with every other class, completely dominating Ele, Necro, Thieves & Wars. It does well against condi Revs as long as you use CoP & Hunter's Fort to negate their condi. -Falselights
